MANILA -- Google said Tuesday the ninth version of its Android operating system, which runs on 2 billion devices, will be called Pie.

Artificial intelligence is the headline feature of Android 9 Pie, wherein the system adapts battery allocation and screen brightness based on how the device is used, Google said.

It also predicts what users would want do with a certain app and pulls up relevant information or "slices." A search for a ride-hailing app, for example, will give the user price and travel time estimates, Google said.

"Making your phone smarter and more adaptive is important, but we also want Android to be easier to use and more approachable," Google said.

Google has named its annual Android refresh after desserts, Android Pie followed Oreo, Nougat, Marshmallow, Lollipop, KitKat, Jellybean, Ice Cream Sandwich, Honeycomb, Gingerbread, Fro-yo, Eclair and Donut.

Google also reduced the on screen navigation buttons to 2 from 3, with just a single pill-shaped home button and a back button.

A new dashboard app will also help users track their device use.

Android 9 Pie will be available from Tuesday as an over-the-air download for Google's Pixel phones. The rollout will also include devices from Sony, Xiaomi, Nokia, Oppo, Vivo, OnePlus and Essential that qualified for the Android 9 beta program.
