MANILA - Typhoon Ompong caused over P14 billion in damage to farm output and infrastructure, much higher than initially projected, the Department of Agriculture (DA) said Monday. Before Ompong struck, Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol said they estimated that the typhoon would cause P7.9 billion damage to rice crops and P3.1 billion to corn. The DA said damage to rice crops was now estimated at P8.97 billion, while damage to corn crops was at P4.5 billion. Ompong also damaged P788 million worth of high-value crops. &quot;As of today, damage and losses to the agriculture sector caused by Typhoon &#x27;Ompong&#x27; increased to P 14.27 billion, affecting a total of 553,704 hectares of agricultural areas with an estimated volume of production loss at 731,294 metric tons,&quot; the DA said. The DA said 212,491 farmers were affected.
