MANILA - Benguet Corp. said Wednesday it did not abandon an open pit mine, contrary to government findings that could lead to its suspension.

The company told the stock exchange it was pursuing the development of the Antamok open pit in Benguet province into a bulk water project and a waste-to-energy facility.

“While the company recognizes there was delay in the rehabilitation of the open pit for reasons beyond its control, it has not abandoned it,” Benguet Corp. said.

The company "has continuously exerted efforts to initiate projects including converting it into a bulk water project, and a waste to energy facility," it added.

Benguet Corp is one of 20 mines that were recommended for suspension for failure to comply with environmental standards.

Benguet Corp. shares were up 7.46 percent to P2.16 on Wednesday.

Nickel Asia and Lepanto Consolidated Mining, who were also cited for violations, aid they have yet to be notified of the suspension.
