<p>MANILA -- The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation or PhilHealth has confirmed the earlier announcement of House Speaker Martin Romualdez that the state health insurance entity will offer free mammograms and ultrasound screening for patients needing them.</p><div><a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/news/2024/3/12/doh-chief-orders-inclusion-of-ultrasound-mammogram-in-philhealth-package-1229" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">DOH chief orders inclusion of ultrasound, mammogram in PhilHealth package</a></div><p>PhilHealth Spokesman Rey Baleña said the agency is now crafting the implementing rules on how members can avail of the free mammogram and ultrasound.</p><p>Baleña said it could even be before July that the program, which will be part of the Konsulta Package, can be launched.</p><p>According to Baleña, the approved rules will then be presented to the PhilHealth board for approval.</p><p>As of now, Baleña cannot yet confirm whether the free mammogram and ultrasound will be offered in private hospitals but he is certain that it will be subsidized, at the very least.</p><p>While the main objective is to enable members to detect breast cancer at an early stage, patients undergoing chemotherapy also need to undergo mammograms and ultrasound to check if the treatment is going well or if the cancer has already spread to other parts of the body.</p><p>In this case, Baleña said the enhanced Z-package for breast cancer may be able to help defray the cost of mammogram and ultrasound screening.</p><div><strong>CANCER SUPPORT GROUPS</strong></div><p>Kasuso Foundation welcomes the free mammogram and ultrasound initiative of the government saying this is a great help, especially for those women who want to undergo screening but do not have the means.</p><div><a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/news/2024/3/5/free-ultrasound-mammogram-in-philhealth-pushed-1807" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Solon wants free ultrasound, mammogram in Philhealth benefits</a></div><p>But its Vice President Aileen Antolin appeals to the government to make the procedure easy and smooth so that more PhilHealth members can avail.</p><p>Based on PhilHealth data, the cost of ultrasound can be as low as P600 while the most affordable mammogram is at P2,000.</p><p>But a quick check with some private hospitals reveals that mammogram costs almost P5,000 while a breast ultrasound costs nearly P4,000.</p><p>In a private hospital in Ortigas, there is a P5,955 package for both ultrasound and mammogram.</p><p>According to the foundation, the latest data in 2020, there were around 27,000 Filipinos diagnosed with breast cancer, an estimated 9,000 died that year.</p><div><span class="fr-video fr-deletable fr-fvc fr-dvb fr-draggable" contenteditable="false" draggable="true"><iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/yxxb6vWquO0?&amp;t=123s&amp;ab_channel=ABS-CBNNewsautoplay=1&amp;wmode=opaque&amp;rel=0" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe></span><br/></div>
