Marcos Jr. is welcomed by Filipino and American officials upon his arrival with the Philippine delegation in Washington D.C., USA, for the first Philippines-U.S.-Japan Trilateral Summit. <em>Handout</em></span></span></span></div><p>WASHINGTON DC — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is “quite excited” to lure into the Philippines small modular nuclear power companies which are “much safer” and “cleaner” energy options for the country, the country’s ambassador to the United States said on Wednesday, hours before the chief executive’s arrival here.</p><p>Marcos is expected to meet several businessmen on the sidelines of his trilateral meeting with his American and Japanese counterparts here in Washington DC, said Philippine Ambassador Jose Manuel Romualdez.</p><p>“The more exciting part of the clean energy projects that we are trying to lure into the country is the small modular nuclear power plants,” the envoy told reporters here.</p><div><a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/business/11/23/23/doe-studying-possible-sites-for-small-nuclear-plants" id="isPasted" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">DOE studying possible sites, including Palawan for small nuclear plants</a></div><p>“The President is quite excited specifically about a company that is going to be supplying these small nuclear power plants,” he said.</p><p>“We have 7,640 islands. This is going to be perfect for us. It’s going to be much safer, cleaner, and at the same time, it’s very new technology,” he added.</p><p>A company called “Ultra Safe” is one of the “biggest contenders into supplying us with small modular nuclear power plants,” Romualdez said.</p><p>Last year, the Philippines and the United States signed a landmark deal that would facilitate cooperation on the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.</p><p>The “123 agreement” provides the legal basis for the US to export nuclear technology to the Philippines for peaceful uses.</p><div><a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/news/11/17/23/philippines-us-sign-deal-on-nuclear-energy-cooperation" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Philippines, US sign &#x27;123&#x27; deal on nuclear energy cooperation</a> </div><div><a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/business/11/16/23/meralco-inks-deal-to-study-use-of-nuclear-batteries" id="isPasted" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Meralco inks agreement to study possible use of micro nuclear reactors in PH</a> </div><p>Marcos Jr. earlier said that he sees “nuclear energy becoming a part of the Philippine energy mix by 2032.”</p><p>“We would be more happy to pursue this path with the United States as one of our partners,” he said last year during the signing of the agreement on the sidelines of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit in San Francisco.</p><p>Meantime, the US-Philippine Society has “organized a large dinner of about 200 businessmen,” which Marcos Jr. is expected to attend during his two-day trip here.</p><p>“This gives you an indication of how much interest there is at this time in investments coming into the country,” Romualdez said.</p><p>The United States is the Philippines’ fourth largest source of foreign direct investments in 2023, amounting to $110 million.</p><p>It is also the biggest export market for Philippine goods and services.</p><div><a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/business/2024/4/11/philippine-trade-deficit-shrinks-as-external-trade-grows-1259" id="isPasted" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Philippine trade deficit shrinks as external trade grows</a></div><div><a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/business/2024/4/11/ph-eyes-trilateral-free-trade-deal-with-us-japan-envoy-1011" id="isPasted" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">PH eyes trilateral free trade deal with US, Japan: envoy</a></div>
