MANILA - The National Water Resources Board has decided to maintain the current water allocation of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System from Angat Dam.

Environment Undersecretary Carlos Primo David said the allocation for May 1 to 15 of 50 cubic meters per second would ensure that the water supply for Maynilad and Manila Water is enough to avoid any service interruption.

David said Maynilad gets an additional allocation of 1 cubic meter per second coming from the allocation of the National Irrigation Administration, to cover the spike in water demand of its customers.

MWSS Division Manager Patrick Dizon assured customers there would be no water interruption unless caused by regular maintenance or emergency repair works.

Angat Dam, which supplies 90 percent of Metro Manila's water needs, had a water level of 188 meters of 6 a.m. Tuesday, which was still above its minimum operating level of 180 meters.

CONSERVING WATER

According to David and Dizon, the DENR and MWSS will coordinate with DILG to monitor if residents are indeed conserving water.

David said the May 1-15 period will be used to implement the prescribed conservation action where customers' consumption will be monitored.

He said the government will also study the possibility of penalties for those whose water use is above normal.

Based on estimates, a normal household uses 22 cubic meters of water per month - that's equivalent to 110 drums (200 liters) per month.

According to David, using water hoses to clean cars and water plants is prohibited, but there are no means to monitor if residents comply.

Swimming pools in subdivisions are also not allowed to change water between now and June, according to David.

INFLATABLE POOLS

An area in Delpan, Binondo set up inflatable and portable swimming pools during weekends to escape the searing summer heat even if these consume a lot of water.

The DENR and MWSS advise customers to refrain from using these pools but residents said they need to do something with the punishing heat to avoid heat stroke.

Dizon reminded consumers to sacrifice conveniences to prevent a repeat of the 2019 water crisis when supply became insufficient and many endured weeks of water interruption.
