MANILA — Malls in the Philippines have become the go-to places as the heat index across the country continues to rise.

Malls are usually where people want to cool down, but in recent weeks with temperatures rising further, more and more people visit these enclosed commercial buildings.

SM Megamall, one of the biggest malls in the country, is seeing increasing foot traffic in the month of April and expects more may visit in the coming weeks. Brian So, SM Megamall Mall Manager, said most of their facilities are indoors and are in air-conditioned places including many of their sports centers.

“We also have other activities inside the mall such as bowling, billiards, we have archery, cinemas as well. They can just go in, enjoy a movie and enjoy the air-conditioning as well,” said So.

Robinsons Magnolia is also seeing a rise in the number of customers since the heat index started to go up. Rowell Venzon, Senior Mall Manager of Robinsons Magnolia, said: “We have significant increase sa foot traffic more or less approximately 20 to 30% during weekdays.”

Both malls also welcome pets who also feel the hot temperature. There is an outdoor area at Robinsons Magnolia for those wanting to feel some breeze, while there is an ice skating rink at SM Megamall for those want really want to feel cold while enjoying at the same time.

And in order to ensure temperatures remain cool inside the mall amid the rise in the number of customers, both malls said they always have regular inspections of the cooling system.

“We do regular maintenance check ups with our generator sets, with our air-conditioning units. We do monthly cleaning of our air conditioning units,” said Megamall’s So.

“We hired experts to do the checking of our air-conditioning system and ventilation system… We make sure our genset backup are in good condition as well,” added Robinson’s Venzon.

Both mall managers see higher number of visitors in the coming days and weeks because of still hot temperatures. But they also said that one can visit their malls even if one won’t buy anything.
