MANILA — Globe on Friday reported "sustained uptrend" in mobile data demand, citing the 1,610 petabytes of mobile data traffic logged during the first quarter of the year.

A petabyte is 1 million gigabytes or 1,000 terabytes.

The figure was a 19 percent jump from the data usage during the same period last year, which was pegged at 1,352 petabytes.

"The average mobile data consumption per user has also seen a sharp hike, surging by 24 percent to an average of 15.6 GB per month. This increase is indicative of the growing engagement and reliance on mobile data among consumers, as digital content consumption and online activities continue to rise," the company said in a statement.

The increased data usage contributed to Globe’s mobile data revenues by 10 percent in the first quarter year, reaching P23.8 billion, up from P21.7 billion in the same period last year.

Mobile data also now accounts for 82 percent of Globe's total mobile revenues, up from 80 percent last year.

"As mobile data becomes a more predominant part of our revenue stream, we are more determined than ever to invest in state-of-the-art technology and infrastructure to provide our customers with an unparalleled digital experience,” said Darius Delgado, head of Globe Consumer Mobile Business.

The company meanwhile noted a slight decline in users' use of SMS and voice messages.
