<p>MANILA — Facebook chalked up to &quot;business decisions&quot; the end of the CrowdTangle social content tracking tool, which is popular among journalists, publishers and researchers, and said a replacement is in the works.</p><p>CrowdTangle is scheduled to be deprecated after Aug. 14, 2024, raising fears on the effect of the loss of facility for studying mis- and disinformation patterns in social media. </p><div><a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/business/2024/3/18/meta-killing-social-content-tracking-tool-crowdtangle-1802">• Meta killing social content tracking tool CrowdTangle</a> </div><p>Manu Gummi, Public Policy Manager for Content, Meta (Hyderabad, India), in a virtual question-and-answer session Monday with around 300 mostly journalists and academics attending a major media industry gathering in Manila by the East-West Center, said a new tool is coming. </p><p>&quot;It&#x27;s just that it&#x27;s a business decision where Meta invests its resources... I can assure you that there is definitely a lot of work that&#x27;s going on, it&#x27;s just diversion of resources from CrowdTangle,&quot; Gummi said. </p><p>&quot;Our data sharing products are evolving over the period of time... The product is evolving, our priorities are evolving, who uses our products are also changing, and the business priorities are also changing as you know,&quot; she said.</p><p>She added: &quot;By the phasing out of CrowdTangle, we are using that to launch other useful resources that folks can use... which will provide very high quality data for researchers. This is something on the way and it is being designed.&quot;  </p><p>She did not give any more details.  </p><p>News of CrowdTangle deprecation came with the advice for researchers of scientific or public interest subjects &quot;with a qualified academic or non-profit institution&quot; to apply for access to a facility called Meta Content Library. </p><div><a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/business/2024/4/1/-grave-step-backwards-meta-shuts-monitoring-tool-in-election-year-921">• &#x27;Grave step backwards&#x27;: Meta shuts monitoring tool in election year</a></div><p>Gummi also downplayed the alleged deprioritization of news content on Meta platforms. </p><p>&quot;I wouldn&#x27;t say we&#x27;re deprioritizing news content from our platforms. Our publishers can still continue to use our platforms to talk about these issues. We are also partnering with media partners as third-party fact-checkers to also keep misinformation in check,&quot; Gummi said.   </p><p>&quot;At the end of it, this is a platform that is driven by its users and we are going by what they would like to see on our platforms and how we cater and tailor our our products to them,&quot; she said. </p><div><strong>&#x27;UNFRIENDING NEWS&#x27;</strong> </div><p>Meta had sunsetted Facebook News this year for users in the U.S. and in Australia in a move seen was part of a larger pivot away from news, an industry with which it had partnered extensively in the last decade as it was building its content and video business. </p><p>The News feature was shut down in the U.K., France and Germany last year. </p><p>Launched in 2019, the News tab curated headlines from national and international news organizations, as well as smaller, local publications. </p><p>The latest Reuters Digital News Report for 2024 point out to a slide in people&#x27;s reliance on social media sites for news, with markets such as the Philippines seeing a climb in consumption of content from platforms such as Tiktok.   </p><p>But still, news discovery via social media remains significant worldwide and, in the face of the rising power of artificial intelligence that may worsen massive mis- and disinformation, journalism watchdogs have said that Facebook&#x27;s ability to mediate content to inform audiences is crucial.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>RELATED VIDEO</strong></div><div><span class="fr-video fr-deletable fr-fvc fr-dvb fr-draggable" contenteditable="false" draggable="true"><iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/uNsBu9UsGd4?&amp;wmode=opaque&amp;rel=0" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe></span><br/></div><div><br/></div>
