MANILA — The MWSS regulatory office has imposed a penalty of P2,038,396.50 against Maynilad for the coliform contamination in 14 barangays of Caloocan City last December 2023, which translates to a rebate of P530.69 per water service connection of 3,841 name customers, an official said on Tuesday.

MWSS chief regulator Atty. Patrick Ty said the penalty may be small but this was based on the guidelines covering the concession agreement and the aside from the penalty.

The issue stemmed from a random sampling of water in an area in Caloocan where the regulator found out that the coliform level is beyond the standards of potable water.

The MWSS RO had the samples tested by a third party and the findings were affirmed.

Maynilad accepted the penalty and said the water supply coming from them is already potable.

"We want to assure our customers that these incidents were promptly addressed and resolved. In response, we have implemented enhanced process interventions, including intensified pipe flushing, accelerated pipe replacements, and expedited leak repairs." Maynilad said in its statement.

Maynilad added that the health and safety of their customers and the integrity of its water supply remain top priorities.

But another official of the MWSS RO said drinking water contaminated with coliform will not cause health issues though the chief regulator says the coliform found in this specific water samples exceeded the allowable coliform level.

The MWSS RO explainws that the coliform found in the water samples was not fecal coliform but is naturally occurring when there is prolonged water interruptions and the water pressure is low.

AREAS AFFECTED

The 14 barangays covered by the rebate order include Barangays 63 to 67 in Caloocan.

Water service connections will get their rebate starting next billing and will be given in 1 big tranche.

This means that if the customer's bill is P1,000 for example, more than P500 will be slashed due to the rebate.

If a customer's bill is just around P100, the more than P500 rebate will be enjoyed for more than 5 months.

Maynilad is also set to announce the rebate for some customers in Imus Wednesday.

The Imus case is due to water discoloration and chlorine residue.
