MANILA -- The Luzon grid is on yellow alert on the first Monday of June.

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said the Luzon grid will be on yellow alert from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., and from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on June 3.

The NGCP said the Quezon Power Philippines Ltd. (QPPL), Pagbilao 2, and Sual 1 plants are out.

The Angat Main plant is unavailable due to low water elevation, while the Masinloc 1, Masinloc 2, Calaca 2, and Ilijan A plants are running on derated capacities.

Overall, two plants have been on forced outage since 2023, while another two went down between January and March 2024.

Twelve power plants went out April and May 2024, while six are running on derated capacities. This means 2,692.8MW of unavailable to the public.

The Luzon grid was under normal condition Sunday after rotational power interruptions hit millions of households on Saturday due to significant supply deficiency.

A yellow alert, meanwhile, is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.

The Philippines has been experiencing power shortages since April. The head of the Department of Energy has even called the situation a "calamity.
