MANILA - The Social Security System has already met half of its four million new members target for 2024, the head of the pension fund said on Friday.

SSS President and CEO Rolando Macasaet said the agency aims to encourage 500,000 more Filipinos to become new members through its Nationwide Registration Day on Friday.

“Importante talaga na pensiyonado ang mga tao pagtanda nila. ‘Pag wala kang pensyon, wala ka nang kita, mahina na ang tuhod mo, mahina na ang mata mo tapos wala kang matanggap ni singko. Hindi na pwede ‘yon,” Macasaet said.

(It's really important that people get a pension when they get old. If you don't have a pension, you don't have any income, your knees are weak, your eyes are weak but you don’t have any income--that shouldn’t be the case anymore.)

SSS e-Wheels or offsite stations are deployed nationwide to accept member applications. The Nationwide Registration Day Caravan will also cater to other concerns such as the issuance of forms, inquiries and verification, updating of member data, and loan applications.

Macasaet said the caravan aims to reach those who are self-employed specifically in small and medium enterprises and encourage them to become SSS members to avail of its benefits, especially upon retirement.

“Lahat ng nagtatrabaho, miyembro na ng SSS. Pero napakaraming small and medium industry. Mga self-employed. Marami ang hindi miyembro ng SSS. Akala nila parating ganoon ang kita nila,” Macasaet said.

(All those who work are members of the SSS. But there are so many small and medium industries, self-employed - many are not SSS members. They think they will always be earning well all their life.)3

SSS said it currently has 43 million members.
