Jonathan Cellona, ABS-CBN News</span></span></span></span></div><p>MANILA -- The Department of Agriculture further expanded the sale of its cheaper rice under its Bigas 29 program as it opened two new sites in Region 4.</p><p>New sites opened in Bacoor, Cavite and San Pedro, Laguna, bringing the number of participating Kadiwa Stores to 15.</p><p>Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. has also announced that large-scale trials will run for one year. Initially, trials will expand in phases after a few months.</p><p>&quot;We want to get the critical information and challenges on demand, supply, logistics and administrative concerns. Ngayon, past 3 weeks na nag-implement tayo, nakita natin concerns halimbawa, saan dapat mas marami kang stock na ilagay, saan yung hindi ganon kalakas yung bentahan,&quot; said Asec. Arnel de Mesa, agriculture spokesperson.</p><p>(In the past three weeks that we have been implementing, we saw concerns like which sites to allocate more supply, and which sites are not reachable by the public.)</p><p>&quot;Ngayong araw, nagsimula na tayo sa Bacoor at sa San Pedro sa Laguna, at sa Cavite at sa Agosto magsisimula naman tayo sa Visayas at Mindanao. By November, it will expand further.)</p><p>The Bigas 29 program started earlier this <a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/business/2024/7/5/bigas29-first-day-of-large-scale-selling-of-cheaper-rice-goes-smoothly-says-agri-1607">July</a> to give vulnerable sector cheaper rice.</p><p>The DA also raised the possibility of even lowering this selling price if world market prices continue to decline in the coming months.</p><p>&quot;We started with P29, in terms of logistics, posible naman yon lalo na kung bababa pa ang cost of production, tinitingnan natin kung magkano gastusin ng NFA, magkano farmgate, but these are social costs that the government has to bear especially this is for the vulnerable sector,&quot; De Mesa said.</p><p>(This is possible especially if we can lower the costs of production, we are checking NFA costs and other expenses that the government has to shoulder.)</p><div><strong>LOWER TARIFFS</strong></div><p>Imported rice under the new tariff scheme have also started to arrive in the country.</p><p>As of July 11 of this year, 302 import clearances have been issued with lower tariffs, as mandated by Executive Order 62.</p><p>Some 35,594 metric tons of imported rice have arrived in the country, and this is expected to be sold in lower prices.</p><p>Based on initial estimate, P6 to P7 per kilo will be slashed in retail prices due to the tariff reduction.</p><p>The Department of Agriculture said the public will feel decreases in rice prices by August.</p><p>&quot;Unti unti na, yung imported ngayon ng rice is lower na than local. August yan mararamdaman talaga, yung pumasok na sa mga palengke. Ngayon di pa ganon kalaki, unti-unti pa lang dumadating sa mga palengke,&quot; De Mesa said.</p><p>(We can slowly feel it as imported rice is now lower than local rice.
