<div><br/></div><div><br/></div><h2>But learning gap a big concern for Philippines</h2><div><br/></div><p>MANILA - A foundation that helps nurture tech entrepreneurs says it is now much easier to start a tech company compared to years ago, but a learning gap remains a major concern in the Philippines’ dreams of being a global tech player. </p><p>An official of PhilDev said thanks to services like cloud computing and software subscriptions, the costs of developing and maintaining a tech startup have significantly gone down. </p><p>“In the past, when I came up, we would have to raise about $5 million to get a company going,” said PhilDev Board Member Paco Sandejas.</p><p>“But today, there&#x27;s so many amazing companies that we started with one or two people, and they can survive that way because we have so many resources that you don&#x27;t need to buy,” Sandejas said.</p><p>He said tech startups today can tap cloud computing services instead of building their own server racks and buying thousands of dollars worth of software. Co-working spaces have also minimized the need for startups to rent their own offices. </p><div><br/></div><p>STUNTED GROWTHLEARNING GAP</p><p>Sandejas however also noted that the Philippines has a significant problem not just in attracting students to pursue a career in science and technology, but in the upgrading the learning abilities of students. </p><p>“Unfortunately, in the Philippines, really, as we all know, there&#x27;s a learning gap at the early years,  and even malnourishment and things like that,” Sandejas said. </p><p>According to the 2022 assessment of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), Filipino students aged 15 years old were still lagging behind in math, reading and science compared to learners from other countries.</p><p>PISA showed that almost no students in the Philippines were top performers in mathematics, while six Asian countries namely Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Macao, Hong Kong, Japan and Korea had the largest shares of students who did so.</p><p>Sandejas said PhilDev is working with the Department of Education to help remedy this. He said simply throwing technology into the problem will not solve it.  </p><p>“Everything is up and coming, and you don&#x27;t just throw money and AI at everything. You have to figure out, okay, what really works and how do our people keep up with the technology development as well.”</p><p>Despite these challenges, Sandejas said he believes that the country can develop singular entrepreneurs who can come up with unicorns, or billion-dollar startups, within the next three to five years.</p>
