MANILA — Filipino supermarket chain Seafood City is now expanding to the digital space with the launch of its mobile phone app SFC+. SFC+ targets mainly Filipinos in North America but it plans to expand to other regions.At the Philippine launch event in Makati, Seafood City officials said they want to complement the customer experience of shoppers which now number to 1 million in-store foot traffic per week. With the app, shoppers can purchase online and can pick up the items in various Seafood City branches in the US and Canada. Delivery options will soon be available.“We are trying to transform now from physical store to digital also. Right now it’s a combination of things. Sometimes you can’t go to the store, you can order from this app,” said Elewin Rebaya, President of SFC+.“All your favorite grilled Filipino food barbecue, liempo, pusit… That serves all your favorite Filipino cakes, Filipino breads, classic hot pandesal all day,” added Matt Go, Vice President of Seafood City on what are some of the things one can be ordered.Officials also said this is not just a shopping app, as they have partnered with various Filipino brands to expand the services and features of the app to cover other different digital services.Users can do  cross-border digital banking, inquire or buy real estate properties, get reward points, gift certificates to be used in the Philippines, convert points to airline miles, send money to the Philippines with no transaction fee, and more. Users can also enjoy discounted subscription fee on iWantTFC.“Your goal is to connect Filipinos to their home, to their roots, through food, through all the products you sell, that’s what we do. TFC, the reason is so successful is because we were able to connect Filipinos home,” said Rafael Lopez, Chairman of ABS-CBN Foundation International, one of the app’s partners.Filipinos can also donate to charities in the Philippines via the app. Rebaya said every time there is a typhoon in the Philippines, Filipinos in North America would normally go to Seafood City branches to donate, now they can do it via the app. Initial partner non-government organizations are Gawad Kalinga and the ABS-CBN Foundation International.The app developer, Talino Venture Studios, said they will continue to look for more Filipino partners to make the app experience more convenient and to allow users to have access to various services in many sectors. Talino Venture Studios President and CEO Winston Damarillo also said that the app is not just for Filipinos in North America, but even for Filipinos in the Philippines who would like to also give back to relatives in the United States or Canada. “You can send your relatives in the States a treat from Grill City. Global Filipinos parang di lang one-way, now gives you capability to treat people in the States,” said Damarillo.Seafood City said its priority target for the app is North America, but it plans to expand worldwide where there are huge Filipino population. SFC+ will be formally launched in the US in October.
