Less than three weeks after the U.S. Presidential election, Guernsey’s auction house will try to make history all over again.“We’re conducting an auction of a number of the most historic objects relating to American history that has ever come up for sale,” said Guernsey’s President, Arlan Ettinger.The auction, scheduled for November 22 in New York City, includes national artifacts and presidential items from across American history - from the very first president, George Washington, to Abraham Lincoln, Dwight Eisenhower, and JFK.Among the marquee items is an 8-foot long, 37-star American flag that draped President Abraham Lincoln’s coffin as it traveled by train from Washington, DC, to its final resting place in Springfield, Illinois. Dating to April 14, 1865, the flag was made by Annin Flagmakers. Guernsey’s is selling it on behalf of the Museum of Southern History in Jacksonville, Florida, which was recently forced to close its doors due to contaminants discovered on the ground on which it was built. The auction will generate money for the acquisition of a new structure.“When you have something that&#x27;s completely unique in, in all the world, how do you guess what it may be worth? The Lincoln train flag has been estimated at between $800 and $1.2 million,&quot; Guernsey’s President Arlan Ettinger said. Additional highlights include a lock of George Washington’s actual hair, preserved inside its original locket and consigned from a small Pennsylvania museum, and a plaster maquette of the Lincoln Memorial by sculptor David Chester French. “Small in size, it is enormous in importance,” Ettinger said.Two 49-star oval office flags and the only 49-star presidential seal, from the Presidency of Dwight Esinhower, will be sold off. Eisenhower became President in 1953 when the nation was comprised of 48 states. In January 1959 Alaska became the 49th state. Hawaii became the 50th in August of that same year. The auction also will include presidential photographic portraits from the Bachrach photography studio, many never before seen in public; sculptures by the late Robert Berks including presidential busts of John F. Kennedy and Abraham Lincoln, and a portrait of Lincoln made by Francis Bicknell Carpenter as a study for his painting, the “First Reading of the Emancipation by President Lincoln,” which hangs today in the U.S. Capitol building. The upcoming sale will be conducted online and live at the Arader Galleries in New York City.“We don&#x27;t know what&#x27;s going to happen at the election, but one way or another, there&#x27;s great focus on the Office of Presidency right now and American history,” Ettinger said. — Report from Reuters
