For the Catholics, Holy Week is the time to reflect on wrong things done, a time for repentance. In such a way, through sacrament and prayers, the heart is getting prepared for Christ.

In that vein, we look into the grave sins committed by the characters in Dirty Linen to open our eyes so that we may also see our own shortcomings and turn away from them.

Murder

“You shall not murder,” says God’s sixth commandment, which the Fieros have clearly violated. In the first episode alone, their housemaid Olivia (Dolly de Leon) died within the confines of their mansion. It led to a chase between Ador (Epy Quizon) and three other helpers Lydia (Ruby Ruiz), Riza (Liza Diño), and Noel (Karl Medina), who all died in the clash and whom they buried at the construction site of their family’s cockpit arena.

Deception

“Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord.” Deception is destructive behavior, a deadly sin that the Fiero family commits to save their reputation. There were scenes in which they schemed the public into believing that Ador's video scandal was fake, and bribed a man to own up to Stella (Rans Rifol)’s murder.

Adultery

“Though shall not commit adultery” is found in the scriptures as well. In the series, Carlos Fiero (John Arcilla) is involved in explosive illicit affairs. There was a scene where he got intimate with their new lady staff, and as the narrative hints, it wasn’t the first and only time he cheated. This man is a notorious womanizer. Just as awful as infidelity is marital rape, which Carlos also committed on Leona (Janice de Belen).

Prostitution

In the story, Ador abuses women by using them as carnal instruments in his porn operations. Among his victims were Riza and Stella.

Envy

This deadly sin is manifested in the character of Tonet (Xyriel Manabat), who can never be happy over the achievements of her cousin Chiara (Francine Diaz). Driven by envy, she ends up competing with and backstabbing her own cousin.

Hatred

Even the key players in the narrative – Alexa (Janine Gutierrez), Rolando (Joel Torre), Lala (Jennica Garcia), and Max (Christian Bables) – are flawed individuals. Their hearts have been marinated in hate, compelling them to take revenge even if it means wounding other potentially innocent people. At the end of the day, if it leads to the harm of one’s neighbor, then, it is an offense.

The message of Christ’s passion, which we are deeply reminded of this Season of Lent, is that wrongdoings can be forgiven if only the offender repents and intends to live a new life of grace. Holy Week is a call for us to admit our mistakes and allow God to restore us to wholeness.
