How is this any different? Because it was done for &#x27;art&#x27;? Because it happens in real life anyway?&quot; </p><p>&quot;I know it&#x27;s based on reality and it does happen in the Philippines, but is that enough to justify the fact that an innocent life was brutally ended for this purpose? It&#x27;s unbearable enough that this even happens at all, and people already decry the act. Why join in when we know better,&quot; she explained. </p><p>Garcia, who admitted to have not yet seen &quot;Oro,&quot; also urged filmmakers to never let a similar incident happen again, claiming that &quot;those who work in this field know that there are countless ways in which that scene could have been executed effectively without harming a single soul.&quot;</p><p>&quot;In pursuit of authenticity, you lost your humanity. Don&#x27;t get me wrong, I&#x27;ve heard great reviews about &#x27;Oro&#x27; and I don&#x27;t doubt the superb quality of the film in its entirety, as well as the competence of its actors, and the message it conveys.&quot;</p><p>&quot;But I do hope that this never happens again. This isn&#x27;t something that we should ever encourage. Or even allow. We were made to be better than this,&quot; she concluded. </p><p>The post from Garcia, whose film &quot;Extra Service&quot; is scheduled for release on January 11, came a day after the version of &quot;Oro&quot; featuring the controversial scene was prohibited from being shown in cinemas by the MMFF executive committee. </p><p>The entry, about a real-life massacre that happened in a small-scale mining community in Caramoan back in 2014, was also <a href="http://news.abs-cbn.com/entertainment/01/03/17/mmff-revokes-oro-prize-over-alleged-animal-cruelty">stripped of its Fernando Poe Jr. Memorial Award for Excellence</a> at the request of Senator Grace Poe, the daughter of the late action star whom the award was named after. </p><p>According to Film Development Council of the Philippines chairperson Liza Dino, who is part of the MMFF executive committee, representatives of &quot;Oro&quot; has admitted to <a href="http://news.abs-cbn.com/entertainment/01/03/17/dog-was-killed-during-filming-oro-team-admits">letting the dog in question die</a> while filming the said scene. </p><p>Diño also said that those behind the film &quot;lied&quot; to her when they initially said that a goat was killed in place of the dog. </p><div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src=" http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/news-special1/entertainment/01/01/oro-010117.jpg"/><figcaption><div class="embed-desc">&quot;Oro&quot; lead star Irma Adlawan and director Alvin Yapan pose for a photo during the recently concluded MMFF 2016 awards night. <em>Photo from the film&#x27;s Facebook page</em></div></figcaption></figure></div><p>In defending their decision, the team of &quot;Oro&quot; said that they deemed it fit to film a real animal being butchered as it &quot;was within the bounds of culture in that area where dogs are eaten as food.&quot; They also stressed that no one from their production team, including the film&#x27;s cast, participated in the slaughter. </p><p>Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), pointing out that the law prohibits the use of animals killed for the purpose of film production, has already vowed to pursue legal action against Yap and his team. </p><p>&quot;We must all collectively stand up against what the director of ORO wants us to do -- to turn a blind eye against animal cruelty. The end does not justify the means, Mr. Alvin Yapan, and you must answer for the crime that has been committed against the dog that was killed for your movie,&quot; read a statement from the group released on Facebook. </p><p>Shandii Bacolod, the producer of &quot;Oro,&quot; called on PAWS to stop what he described as a &quot;trial by publicity&quot; and that they should pursue their complaints in court. </p>
