Nadine Lustre tears up as she talks about her relationship with James Reid in a March 2019 episode of ‘Tonight with Boy Abunda’. ABS-CBN

MANILA — Nadine Lustre once said she can’t imagine life without James Reid, about a year before they confirmed, in a joint statement, that they have broken up.

The two stars, who would have celebrated their fourth anniversary on February 11, said on Monday that they decided to part ways to “focus on ourselves not only for our careers but more for our personal growth.”

The statement, which shocked long-time fans of “JaDine” on social media, now appears to be a stark contrast to Lustre’s most recent interview delving into her relationship with Reid.

At the time, in March 2019, Lustre was asked by TV host Boy Abunda if she can “imagine a life without James.”

She responded: “Parang no. Iiyak ako! Iba talaga. I’m really, really thankful na he came into my life. It was so different before.”

In the interview that aired on “Tonight with Boy Abunda,” Lustre also credited Reid for changing her for the better, and for her “healing.”

Lustre, who has been open about her past struggles with depression and anxiety, said Reid had been instrumental in helping her be more calm and more open when it comes to communicating her emotions.

In a moment that now appears to have foreshadowed the breakup, Lustre said, “‘Yung naging transition ko from who I was before, to the person I am now is so beautiful na kahit hindi na kami ni James, he will always have a special place in my heart, kasi talagang nag-grow kami.”

When asked then whether she sees Reid as the person she will spend the rest of her life with, Lustre initially said, “I hope so.”

“Even if he’s not,” she added, “I’m always going to be thankful for him… I think he was the biggest instrument for my healing, and for just discovering myself and finding myself.”
