Enchong Dee on ABS-CBN franchise threat: Democracy, not just jobs, in peril

<div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="https://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/2019/entertainment/01/29/20190129-kapamilya-2.jpg?ext=.jpg"/><figcaption>Actor Enchong Dee.<em> ABS-CBN</em></figcaption></figure></div><p>MANILA — Actor Enchong Dee on Wednesday aired his support for ABS-CBN amid the <a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/news/02/10/20/read-statement-of-abs-cbn-on-osgs-quo-warranto-petition-we-did-not-violate-the-law">challenges</a> to its broadcast franchise, saying it’s not only a case of thousands of jobs, but also the country’s democracy, being put at risk.</p><p>On Twitter, Dee lamented how some of his fellow artists have been reluctant to express their stand on political issues out of fear that it might negatively impact their celebrity.</p><p>“I always tell people that, ‘Artists should be the first line of democracy.’ People tend to agree, but mostly do nothing about it or get reprimanded for saying something political. Very few listen and even fewer are brave enough to stand their ground because of their ‘reputation,’” he said.</p><p>“Now that ABS-CBN (my home for almost 15 years) is being wrongly accused of many things, I am angry. I am sad. I am bothered,” Dee added.</p><p>Dee, 31, has been a Kapamilya since 2006, and is one of the long-time contract artists of ABS-CBN’s talent management arm Star Magic. I know that we will rise together stronger than ever before, kasama ng libo-libong empleyado ng ABS-CBN,” he said.</p><p>“I am a Filipino first and my job comes second. Let’s be vigilant not only because jobs are in peril, but mainly because we are Filipinos fighting for the democracy and constitution of our country,” Dee wrote.</p><p>Dee has made headlines time and again for expressing his opinion on a range of national issues. Numerous times, he has been critical of the Duterte administration’s policies, even as he belatedly revealed, in 2018, that he had “voted for this president we have.”</p><p>“I know after this post, paid trolls would attack me, but I stand firm with my beliefs and I am not afraid to lose my little popularity,” he said.</p>
