MANILA – “You have no idea how hard it is to crush people’s dreams right in front of them.”

This was the statement of James Reid in an apparent response to the recent social media post of Juan Karlos Labajo, although not expressly addressed to him.

Early this week, Labajo expressed his disappointment over how the judges of “Idol Philippines” let go of reggae artist Luke Baylon.

During his audition, the 21-year-old singer from Tuguegarao City performed a reggae version of Alicia Keys’ “If I Ain’t Got You.”

Among the judges, only Regine Velasquez voted in favor of Baylon, with Reid, Vice Ganda, and Moira dela Torre pointing out that there was something lacking in the performance.

Praising Baylon’s natural talent, Labajo said: “It’s a yes for me. I’m not even gonna argue with the other judges. It’s easy to fix flats and sharps and such imperfections, but it’s not that easy to find soul. Kakagigil.”

“Huge shame on the other ‘judges’ for not seeing this guy’s potential. What a shame. Such a shame. I’m ashamed,” he added.

But Reid is not having any of it.

On Twitter, Reid said that it is never easy to carry the burden of letting go of an artist.

“That’s the burden we carry as judges, to try and give one special person a chance of a lifetime. Just wait. The audition isn’t even the hardest part,” he said.

Despite their decision not to send Baylon to the next round, Reid still praised the aspiring singer for his grit.

“Like I said, Luke Baylon is a good singer but we’re looking for the total package. Wait till you see the 12 finalists. You’ll see why I said he wasn’t ready,” he said.

“For now, I wish Luke all the success in his music career. That rendition of If I Ain’t Got You was sick,” he added.
