MANILA—TV host Mariel Padilla, a self-professed Catholic, defended her decision to wear a hijab on Eidl al-Fitr, saying she respects her husband Robin Padilla’s religion.

Mariel addressed the topic after a follower questioned her use of a hijab, as seen in an Instagram photo greeting “our brothers and sisters in Islam” Eid Mubarak.

“I am not a Muslim. I am a Catholic. I was born a Catholic and I still am,” Mariel answered. “But I respect my husband’s religion therefore kasama niyo ako sa pag gugunita ng Eid Al Fitr kaya bumati kami ng anak ko ng Eid Mubarak sa lahat ng mga kapatid namin sa Islam (kasama ka doon).”

Mariel, who married Robin in 2010, also pointed out that the photo was taken inside a mosque, where she and her daughter opted to wear the proper attire.

“Nasa loob kami ng mosque. ‘Diba ‘yan ang tamang kasuotan sa loob ng mosque? ‘Diba dapat naka hijab sa loob ng mosque?” she asked the follower.
