Lea Salonga hopes 'Yellow Rose' would start conversation about immigration

<div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/2019/entertainment/06/27/lea-salonga-eva-noblezada.jpg"/><figcaption>Lea Salonga and Eva Noblezada star in &#x27;Yellow Rose&#x27;</figcaption></figure></div><p>MANILA – “Yellow Rose,” the acclaimed movie starring Lea Salonga and Eva Noblezada, has been chosen to be the opening film for the prestigious Asian American International Film Fest next month in New York City.</p><p>Speaking on “Magandang Buhay” via phone patch on Thursday, Salonga said she is very proud of the film which centers on the life of a Filipina girl (Noblezada) from Texas whose country music dreams are derailed by a threat of deportation.</p><p>“It’s a really beautiful film. I got to see it nung nasa New York ako and when I saw it, it is really good. This is something that will touch a lot of people’s hearts,” she said.</p><p>Noting that the movie’s release is perfectly timed, Salonga said it is her hope that “Yellow Rose” will start a conversation with regard to immigration especially in the United States.</p><p>While a Philippine release date has yet to be announced, Salonga is hoping her Filipino fans and those abroad could make time for the movie.</p><p>“It’s a movie that I’m really proud of and going in, hindi ko alam kung anong magiging resulta ng pelikula, pero nung nakita ko na ng buo, napakaganda talaga. I’m not just saying this because I did it. I’m saying this because it’s beautifully written and it’s something we can be proud of,” she said.</p><p>Joining Noblezada and Salonga in the film are Filipino screen veteran Princess Punzalan, and American country singer Dale Watson.</p><figure class="op-interactive"><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/o-a3t3RSvsQ?enablejsapi=1"></iframe></figure><div class="iwantbar">Watch more in <a href="//www.iwantv.com.ph/">iWantv</a> or <a href="//tfc.tv/">TFC.tv</a></div><p>Prior to its theatrical run, “Yellow Rose” garnered several awards, including the grand jury prizes from the 2019 Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival, the 2019 Bentonville Film Festival, and the CAAMFEST37.</p><p>Noblezada also won special jury prize at the LAAPFF for her breakout performance.</p><p>“‘Yellow Rose’ has taken over 15 years to make and it couldn’t come at a more important time when anti-immigrant sentiment is at an all-time high. This is a story for everyone facing challenges in finding their voice, their dreams and, more importantly, their home,” filmmaker Diane Paragas earlier said.</p><p>The film is supported by New York-based Asian CineVision, Cinematografo Originals (ABS-CBN Global), and was awarded the Ravenal Foundation Feature Film Grant last year by the New York Women in Film &amp; Television.</p>
