Concert recap: Pinoy fans surprise Tom Misch in PH debut

<p>MANILA -- Indie acts Tom Misch and Vancouver Sleep Clinic made their Philippine debut to a capacity crowd last August 23 at the ABS-CBN Vertis North Tent in Quezon City for Karpos Live Mix 2.1. </p><p>The night started with a performance by local R&amp;B band, Nathan and Mercury, whose set was filled with songs moving from funk to slow jazz with the leader singer’s vocals eliciting positive reactions from the amped up crowd. </p><div><strong>VANCOUVER SLEEP CLINIC </strong></div><div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="https://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/2018/life/09/04/20180904_concert_01.jpg"/><figcaption>Vancouver Sleep Clinic. <em>Photo by Jeeves de Veyra</em></figcaption></figure></div><p>There was a quiet drama to the set of Vancouver Sleep Clinic. Tim Bettinson’s vocals ranged from effortless falsetto to almost rapping in some songs. </p><p>A stripped-down performance, with no graphics in the background, the set utilized strobe lighting and various light effects during to get an almost dreamy effect. </p><p>Newly freed from a label, the artist showcased new songs like &quot;Beautiful Twilight&quot; that had an almost reggae vibe; &quot;In the End,&quot; a beachy summer song; and the dramatic &quot;Closure,&quot; among others. </p><p>One of the highlights was a cover of Drake’s &quot;Don’t Matter to Me,&quot; which had the crowd singing and dancing along. </p><div><strong>TOM MISCH </strong></div><div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="https://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/2018/life/09/04/20180904_concert_02.jpg"/><figcaption>Tom Misch. <em>Photo by Jeeves de Veyra</em></figcaption></figure></div><p>Tom Misch’s performance was highly anticipated, as was apparent from the chanting heard before he went on stage, as well as the crowd’s reaction to his songs. </p><p>It was a glorious singalong again for those who attended the concert, which seemed to surprise Misch, who went, “Wow Manila!” during a porition of “I find myself keep on coming back to you.” </p><p>Misch’s music is dreamy and romantic -- attributes very much in display in songs like &quot;Movie,&quot; that even featured an live spoken word piece by Misch sister, Polly Misch, as its prologue. </p><p>Looping was also a big part of the set, with Misch doing an improvised looping piece, pre-facing the song with “This is the part that I’m going to do a little jam in my guitar, and let’s see what’ll happen.” </p><div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="https://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/2018/life/09/04/20180904_concert_03.jpg"/><figcaption>Tom Misch. <em>Photo by Jeeves de Veyra</em></figcaption></figure></div><p>Misch also performed a cover of the Stevie Wonder song, “Isn’t She Lovely” to the delight of the crowd who sang along to the tune. </p><p>There was also spontaneous hands-up-waving-up-in-the-air in songs like &quot;Crazy Dream&quot; and &quot;South of the River.&quot; </p><p>With passionate chanting of “We want more,” the Karpos Live Mix 2.1 crowd welcomed Misch back to the stage for an encore, singing three more songs. </p><p>&quot;Lost in Paris&quot; was a scatting delight for the crowd, humming along to music, followed by a heartfelt rendition of &quot;Follow.&quot; Misch ended his set with the soulful Watch Me Dance, a song about memories—a fitting end to a concert that will be well-remembered. </p><p>The next Karpos Mix Live event, Karpos Mix 2.2, is set for October 6, featuring homegrown acts Ben &amp; Ben, and Clara Benin.</p>
