‘Los Bastardos’ pilot basks in classic telenovela glow

<p>With a Spanish title reminiscent of the heydays of Mexican telenovela on Philippines primetime, “Los Bastardos” unmistakably embraces those roots with its classic storytelling and cinematic flavor, at least going by its pilot episode that aired on Monday.</p><div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/2018/tvpatrol/10/15/20181015-losbastardos.jpg"/><figcaption>Geoff Eigenmann and Cristine Reyes portray Roman and Soledad, respectively, in ‘Los Bastardos.’ <em>ABS-CBN</em></figcaption></figure></div><p>Joining ABS-CBN’s “Kapamilya Gold” lineup, the RSB Drama Unit production opens in Hacienda Cardinal, where Roman (Geoff Eigenmann) meets for the first time the owner of the sprawling estate — his father, Ismael (Dante Rivero).</p><p>The confrontation is soaked in sepia, to mean it depicts the past of Cardinal patriarch Roman, portrayed in older age by screen veteran Ronaldo Valdez.</p><p>The young Roman reveals his mother has passed away, and that she pointed him to Ismael’s direction. An illegitimate son — a “bastardo” in Roman’s own words — he readily takes on Ismael’s challenge to prove his worth, becoming a manual worker at the sugarcane plantation.</p><p>As he starts his new life, Roman falls in love with Soledad (Cristine Reyes), also a hacienda worker. With their future in mind, Roman tries odd jobs in Manila, shifting his focus away from his father’s task.</p><p>Ismael, however, suddenly falls ill and dies, leaving Roman as the sole inheritor of Hacienda Cardinal. Faced with no choice, Roman takes charge of the estate — his father’s legacy. That much he received, but never Ismael’s acceptance and love, Roman realizes at his father’s grave.</p><figure class="op-interactive"><iframe height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/wHT-btTX4mQ?enablejsapi=1" width="560"></iframe></figure><div class="iwantbar">Watch more in <a href="//www.iwantv.com.ph/">iWantv</a> or <a href="//tfc.tv/">TFC.tv</a></div><p>Now married to Soledad, the two grapple not only with ensuring the plantation’s survival, but also building their own family. Not long after their wedding, they welcome a baby boy.</p><p>Roman’s turn as a father sets into motion the the title’s premise, and depicts the dramatic irony of having not one but five bastard sons, as teased in trailers for the series.</p><p>The first hint of this future is Roman’s chance encounter with Alba (Roxanne Barcelo), a seductive woman whom he rescues from a panicked horse she was riding.</p><p>It is not yet known which of the “bastardos” — portrayed by Jake Cuenca, Diego Loyzaga, Marco Gumabao, Albie Casiño, and Josh Colet — Roman’s first son will grow up to be.</p><p>Based on the Precious Hearts Romances series “Cardinal Bastards,” ABS-CBN’s “Los Bastardos” airs weekdays after “Kadenang Ginto.”</p>
