(UPDATE) ENHYPEN paid tribute to BTS by releasing on Friday a cover of the K-pop supergroup’s breakout single “I Need U.”

The cover is part of the 10th anniversary celebration of K-Pop ON! (온), Spotify’s flagship K-pop playlist.

With the theme “My First K-pop Crush,” the campaign tasked participating artists — that also includes duo Shownu X Hyungwon and girl group STAYC — to record their own versions of songs by senior colleagues “who first fueled their love for K-pop.”

For the project, ENHYPEN picked “I Need U,” a career-defining single that gave BTS its first win on a South Korean music chart show.

In the cover, “laidback acoustic instrumentals replace the electronic synth sounds from the original version for an Afro-rhythm twist,” Spotify said in a statement.

“In addition to bringing ENGENEs (our fans) a new track, this was our chance to tell the stories of our beginnings with K-pop through a song loved by the members,” ENHYPEN said in a joint statement.

In a 2022 press conference in Manila, ENHYPEN member Sunoo cited BTS as his group’s musical influence.

Notably, both groups belong to sub-labels of K-pop company Hybe: BTS under Big Hit Music and ENHYPEN from Belift Lab.

Meanwhile, Shownu X Hyungwon will release their single on February 29, followed by STAYC on March 15.
