Photo by Josh Mercado</figcaption></figure>MANILA -- In 2018, former president Rodrigo Duterte officially declared Lapu-Lapu, who fought and defeated the Spanish invaders led by Ferdinand Magellan, as a national hero.Now Sultanate Films International owned by Cosanie Derogongan will bring the Visayan chieftain’s life story to the big screen in “Kampilan: The Untold Story of Kalip Pulaka” (the old name of Lapu-Lapu).The biopic is written and directed by Angelo Carpio, and produced by Derogongan, Sultan Bob Datimbang, and Shiekh Abdulrazzaq Siddiq.“This movie will provide more knowledge to non-Muslims about the Muslim culture as told in the Muslim version from the South,” Derogongan told ABS-CBN News during the film’s recent press conference. “Maganda ang kuwento ni Lapu-Lapu na alam kong maraming Pilipino ang makaka-relate. Hindi lang ito kuwento ng pakikipaglaban. Kuwento rin ito ni Lapu-Lapu bilang isang tao. Sino ba siya bilang isang kaibigan, bilang isang anak, bilang isang tao. Makikita ‘yan sa pelikula,” the producer said.“We&#x27;re thrilled to be part of this historical film. It&#x27;s a great opportunity to showcase our culture and history, and we&#x27;re confident that &#x27;Kampilan&#x27; will resonate with audiences worldwide,” he added.Derogongan also emphasized: “We don’t want to rewrite history. Ito ay kuwento ng mga Muslim. Baka mayroon tayong mapagkaisahan in the future through Sultanate Films International.”Several actors have already portrayed Lapu-Lapu in previous films, including Lamberto Avellana (1955), Mario Montenegro (1955), Calvin Millado (1995), Lito Lapid (2002), and Michael Copon (2023).The film’s director said they are still casting the film. “We’re searching now. Siyempre based ito sa aming pag-aaral. Mayroon na kaming names na naiisip,” Carpio said.“Ito ay ginawa para sa mga Pilipino,” he added. “Kumita man o hindi, sapat na sa amin ng mapalitaw namin ang kasaysayan ng mga Pilipino.” “We want to bring to light the untold stories of our heroes, especially those from the South. Lapu-Lapu&#x27;s courage and defiance against colonial forces is a story that needs to be told, and we&#x27;re excited to share it with the world,&quot; he ended.
