MJ Felipe, ABS-CBN News</figcaption></figure></div>MANILA — Three weeks before her third major solo concert, “Suklay Diva” and certified belter Katrina Velarde underwent an appendectomy last March 23, after experiencing major abdominal pains.She said her appendix was already inflamed and required immediate operation.“Hindi ko po masabi na malayo sa bituka, kasi sa bituka talaga siya. Sa appendix po. Mayroon naman po na go signal from the doctor na in three weeks, I can sing. Huwag lang sasayaw masyado,” she told ABS-CBN News Wednesday.Velarde admitted that she got worried that because of the emergency operation, the concert might have to be postponed. “The first thing na tinanong ko sa doctor after niyang sabihin na kailangan ka nang operahan tonight, ang una kong tinanong sa doctor ay makakakanta po ba ako sa 13? Sabi naman ng doctor, three weeks kaya na naman ‘yun,” she said.She recalled that she was in extreme pain before undergoing operation.“Hindi po ako makalakad. Night before ako nagpa-ER, akala ko kabag lang. The next morning, same, ang sakit pala,” Velarde said.She is now okay and all set for her concert, titled &quot;Z-CON: The Gen Z Icons concert.&quot; This is Velarde&#x27;s comeback concert after a five-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown.Her last two major concerts were back in 2019 - the first was produced by Viva and Manila Genesis, and the second concert was solely produced by Viva.Compared to her last two concerts, Velarde will be showcasing songs that are certified hits to the Gen Z market.One unique element in this concert is that Velarde won’t be using back-up singers. She said she was inspired by Ariana Grande and composer-producer Troy Laureta’s recent concert here in Manila.“I did everything, we’re doing the back-up vocals na nakasabay sa music. Ginawa ko yun. Parang yun na po kasi yung in ngayon. Hindi na sila nagba-back up singers,” she said.Meanwhile, Velarde also revealed that she received an invitation to join and compete in Britain’s Got Talent. Velarde received the invitation from the talent show last January but she politely declined. “I’m still getting inquiries to join some international competitions pero para po sa akin, tapos na ako sa contests,” she said.She added: “I’m still thinking about it po, parang all my life kasi, ‘yung buong pinagdaanan ko mula pagkabata ko lahat contests na ko nang nag-contest. And I really want to enjoy what I have at the moment, especially with ABS-CBN.”“It’s not as easy as it is po kasi, you will join, you have to be in that country. Hindi naman po siya pupunta ka run tapos kakanta ka, tapos may process pa rin doon. Tapos malalayo ako sa anak ko, parang hindi na po doon yung heart ko,” Velarde said.Velarde said her passion is now with performing in &quot;ASAP Natin To&quot;, concerts and collaborations with other artists. At the moment, she is grateful for the exposure and importance that ASAP is giving her every week, a thing that used to be just a dream.“Sana makakanta ako sa ASAP, unti-unti nag-gue-guest. Tapos lately, sobrang sweet ng ASAP family kasi hindi nila ako kinakalimutan. Na-appreciate ko talaga every production number and to be able to perform with other amazing artists,” she said.Velarde is set to hit the concert stage this Saturday, April 13, for her “Z-CON: The Gen Z Icons concert” at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater in Circuit Makati.
