Henry Cavill plays Gus March-Phillips in Guy Ritchie's latest action-comedy film, “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.”

As the leader of a special team entrusted with a top-secret mission to sabotage Nazi operations, the actor shared how he approached the role that’s based on a real person.

"I want to have an understanding of who these guys were but also be prepared for everything to change on the day," said Cavill, "and for us to stick to the spirit of who these people were and the spirit of the mission, and the time in history."

“The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” features Ritchie’s trademark offbeat humor and characters that are compelling to watch.

Hero Fiennes Tiffin plays one of the fictional characters in the film. He's a sailor whose own personal tragedy is a major factor in his desire to stop the Nazis.

Asked if he created an additional backstory for his character, Tiffin quipped: "No, I spoke a lot more but all my lines just got cut. I kind of learned who our characters were as the process of filming went on."

He added: "I think he knows that there's an element of value in talking less and listening and learning, especially directly from Gus, so I'm glad that that came across."

Tiffin also praised Ritchie for ensuring that the characters in the story are diverse and interesting in different ways.

"They're always an eclectic range of really, really interesting characters," he added. "So, I was happy to be one of them."

Alex Pettyfer also stars as Geoffrey Appleyard, or Apple, the team’s master planner.

"If I were to put it to a word: collaborative," he said of working in a Guy Ritchie film. "I think he (Ritchie) is a master conductor and brings this incredible creative experience where you have a voice in the process."

The cast shared that they developed a close friendship while working together.

The actors added that making the film was a great experience in huge part because of Cavill’s compassionate leadership.

Pettyfer revealed a particularly sweet gesture that Cavill did for the cast before filming.

"How he presents himself is the most humble gentleman and sets an example for all of us as a young cast who are coming into a big experience and a big Guy Ritchie movie," said Pettyfer of his co-star.

He added: "Two weeks before starting the movie, this gentleman emailed all of us personally, telling us how excited he (Cavill) was to collaborate, and we couldn't have asked for a better captain of the ship."

The film’s all-star cast also includes Eiza González, Henry Golding, Alan Ritchson, Cary Elwes, and Babs Olusamokun.
