Cinemalaya pays tribute to Jaclyn Jose, Armando ‘Bing’ Lao via screening of film ‘Ma’Rosa'

<p>MANILA -- Cinemalaya held a screening of the film &quot;Ma&#x27; Rosa&quot; to pay tribute to award-winning actress Jaclyn Jose and screenwriter-filmmaker Armando &quot;Bing&quot; Lao at Ayala Malls Manila Bay Cinema 2 on Thursday night.</p><p>Jose, who passed away on March 2 due to a heart attack, starred in the 2016 Filipino drama film &quot;Ma&#x27; Rosa,” where she earned the Best Actress award at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival for her outstanding performance as Rosa.</p><p>Jose is the first Southeast Asian and Filipino to bag such an award, cementing her special contribution to the film industry.</p><div><br/></div><div><span class="fr-img-caption fr-fic fr-dib" style="width:955px"><span class="fr-img-wrap"><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/17231763124830ab84ef9-730e-449e-aff5-96e07c42da86.jfif" style="width:955px" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/><span class="fr-inner" style="text-align:left">Director Brillante Mendoza</span></span></span></div><p>“Ma’ Rosa” tackles drugs, poverty, and corruption, following the story of a family who sells illegal drugs which gets Rosa and her husband behind bars. In exchange for their liberty, the family has to produce a huge amount of money and reveal their sources.</p><p>Meanwhile, Lao, who passed away last June 18, served as a creative consultant for the film.</p><p>Lao was also known for his award-winning screenplays for “Takaw-Tukso” which won Urian Best Screenplay in 1987, “Serbis” which became an official entry for the Cannes Film Festival in 2008, and many more.</p><p>The director of “Ma’cRosa,” Brillante Mendoza, who graced the screening, said so many memories flashed when he watched the film again.</p><p>“Sobrang daming alaala ang nakita ko kanina habang pinanonood ko ang pelikula. ‘Di lang kay Jane ‘no kung &#x27;di kay Kristoffer King na nawala na rin. Imagine mo napagsama-sama ko &#x27;yung (mga) artistang ‘yun na pinakamagaling sa industriya. Andun si Mercedes (Cabral), andun si Baron Geisler. Parang nakakalungkot lang, nakaka-miss,” he said.</p><p>Mendoza said Jose and Lao were like siblings to him, especially since they started in the industry almost at the same time.</p><p>“Tapos ngayon nagbibigay ako ng tribute sa kanila. Parang nakakalungkot ‘no at nakaka-miss din,” he said.</p><p>“Ang daming memories na bumalik sa isip ko kanina nung nag-uumpisa kami. Sabi ko nga noon napakahirap gumawa ng pelikula. Napakahirap pa rin naman gumawa ng pelikula ngayon pero iba na.
