Alamat’s Tomas Rodriguez on getting into theater: ‘Never ko pa ito nagawa!’

<p>After being officially launched as part of the P-Pop group Alamat in 2021, Tomas Rodriguez admitted he had no inkling that he would be one day headlining a major musical production as part of the cast of <em>Bagets the Musical </em>which opens in January next year. In the show, Tomas will be alternating in the role of Gilbert with Noel Comia. The role was originally played by Herbert Bautista in the &#x27;80s film. </p><p>“Sobrang shocked po and at the same time po sobrang grateful dito. At ang una kong naisip is gagalingan ko. Actually may mga series sana ako kaya lang hindi kakayanin kung sabay-sabay and mas pinili ko din itong musical theater kasi never ko pa ito nagawa. Siyempre I also love learning new skills. Siyempre, unang una, excited ako dun sa bonding with other cast members, yung mga learnings na bago, yung mga kakantahin na songs, and yung pag-acting ng mga scenes. Kaya hindi lang po siya sa theater, para sa akin and sa mga naniniwala sa kakayahan ko. Saka ko na lang siguro sasabihin na satisfied ako sa acting pag lahat ng role nagawa ko na, and very open ako matuto sa kahit ano.”</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/2023/8/12/exclusive-lyca-gairanod-s-first-love-team-partner-is-alamat-member-tomas-rodriguez-837"><strong><u>READ: EXCLUSIVE: Lyca Gairanod’s first love team partner is Alamat member Tomas Rodriguez</u></strong></a></div><p> Even though the original film was shot way before his generation, Tomas said he could still relate to its storyline of the challenges of growing up.</p><p>“Nung sinabi na may audition ako para dito, pinanuod ko po yung <em>Bagets</em> movie. And si mama, before ako mag audition tinanong ko siya kung alam ba niya yung <em>Bagets</em>, and sabi niya, sikat na sikat daw yan before. Natuwa ako while watching the film kasi nakaka-relate ako sa lahat ng characters at may mga part ng kuwento ng bawat isa na na-re-relate ko sa sarili ko,” he explained. </p><p>Despite being busy with his commitments to his P-Pop group Alamat which is set to release their newest album ‘<em>Destino</em>’ in the near future, Tomas said he will try to balance everything for his dreams, with the help of his management agency.</p><p>“Pag gusto mo naman magagawan ng paraan lagi. And at the same time, I have Viva naman para tulungan ako mag-ayos ng schedule ko and hindi ko naman tatanggapin ito kung hindi ko kaya and kaya ng health ko,” he said. </p><p>The <em>Bagets the musical</em> cast member also said that he plans on using his previous acting experiences to help him with his latest role. “Nakita na po kasi nila ako mag-acting sa ilang movies, Alamat MV and serye before tapos sumayaw and kanta pero dito bago kasi live siya tapos musical pa—sing, dance and acting all together. And solid nito kasi walang take two, kung magkamali man, the show must go on pa din. Excited nga po ako eh, kung anong surprise ni Papa God,” he revealed. </p><p> <em>Bagets The Musical </em>is scheduled to run from January 23 to March 2026 at the Newport Performing Arts Theater. The musical is a joint production of VIVA Communications Inc., The Philippine STAR and NEXT by Philstar Media Group, and Newport World Resorts, guided by the creative vision of the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) Plus, with director Maribel Legarda, playwright J- mee Katanyag, and musical director Vince Lim.</p>
