Romnick Sarmenta on why people should watch stage plays

<p>Having been in the industry since the late 1970s as a child actor, Romnick Sarmenta has literally grown up onscreen. In the hit series <em>FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano,</em> Romnick played villain Juan to protagonist Cardo (played by Coco Martin).</p><div><br/></div><p>In 2023, Romnick took home the Best Actor nod for his portrayal of a professor in the Summer Metro Manila Film Festival entry <em>About Us But Not About Us</em>. Simply because it is another set of experiences to have, to share, to turn into memories and learnings. When I found out in 2023 that I was asked to do this piece, this role in <em>The Impossible Dream, </em>I was already very excited. I know the writer and the director, and have always looked forward to working with them. We I read the piece, I was hooked!” he told Push ABS-CBN in an exclusive interview.</p><div><br/></div><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/highstreet2024/articles-photos/meet-romnick-sarmentas-amazing-5-in-these-lovable-photos-16519" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><strong>LOOK: Meet Romnick Sarmenta’s ‘Amazing 5’ in these lovable photo</strong></a></div><div><br/></div><div><br/></div><p>Romnick admitted he enjoys the challenge of shifting his acting styles between two different platforms.</p><div><br/></div><p>“Theater demands a different approach. There are no close-up shots and no retakes. The action has to be significant and clear, and the tone of voice has to be precise, in order to draw the audience in and share with them the narrative. This had always been the learnings that I try to continue to improve whenever I am on stage, as my foundations had always been on screen, there were many things I had to learn.</p><div><br/></div><p>&quot;Theater is, in more ways than one, a medium for the actor. But it must be the character that they see and not us. To the point that while we are honored to play the parts, we are not who they desire to see the whole time, but rather the characters in the play,” he explained. </p><div><br/></div><p>For those who have never bought a ticket to theater before, Romnick has this to share about why it will be worth the expense.</p><div><br/></div><p>“Because theater is a place where you must become challenged and uncomfortable. Theater should make you think, ask questions, learn about things. It is still the greatest form of story telling, there are no special effects, no post production treatments, no corrections. It is as raw as it gets. And for me, it is the most moving, as stage actors bare themselves for the sake of telling the story well.</p><p>&quot;A stage play is always worth more than what you pay for tickets. I just hope that people continue to grow their support for the arts. We will always try to be a part of the good stories, there are several films and streaming projects being done... and there will be more,” he shared.  </p><p>Catch PETA&#x27;s Changing Narratives Festival.
