With professional women’s volleyball continually growing in popularity, it’s not hard to imagine why athletes like Kianna Dy, Jolina Dela Cruz, and Fifi Sharma also have their own share of fans just like any local celebrity. The three recently attended a meet-and-greet event with their fans during the Watsons Summer event held in SM Megamall last May 8.

These top athletes, who all play for various teams in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) recently talked to PUSH ABS-CBN about how their mother’s big contribution to their success in their sport.

For Kianna’s mom Bambi Dy, being a doctor did not stop her for still being there for her daughter despite her busy schedule. “My mom is very supportive ever since grade school she’s been there. She would drive me to trainings, drive me to games. She would watch my games kahit may clinic siya. She always supports me kahit ngayon, even if we don’t get to see each other that much nga because our season is long, she would text how I am, yung mga ganun. The little things. She’s really there all the time for me,” Kianna shared.

Fifi shared that her mom has been her biggest support system throughout her playing career, “I think she gave me all the support she could give throughout the years I have been pursuing my career. Every time na I’d have a game, important man o hindi, she’d always be there. And she would make sure that I’m well fed and I have everything that I need. So she’s a big help. I don’t think I’d be where I am today if it weren’t for her. I think the most recent memory that I treasure is getting to travel with her. Recently, we went to Japan. That’s actually been my dream, to bring any of my family members to a different country and get to share my blessings. So I got to bring my mom and my sister to Japan and well, my mom always loves traveling so I love that we got to share that memory together, traveling abroad.”

Even during the most challenging time in her career when she was nursing a major injury, Jolina revealed how much her mom devoted her life to her. “I think she helped me a lot especially sa volleyball journey ko. Mas lalo ko siya na-appreciate nung na-injure ako. Like grabe yung pag-aasikaso niya sa akin. Hindi niya talaga ako iniwan nun. Taga-Bulacan kami eh. Tapos pumupunta siya sa condo ko tapos talagang nag-stay siya dun ng matagal. Almost a year talaga akong nawala sa volleyball nandun lang siya sa condo ko. Pini-prepare niya yung mga kailangan ko like sa food ko at mga gamot na kailangan ko i-take. Naturuan niya kasi ako kung paano maging matapang eh. Hindi naman ako makakarating dito sa pros without her help. Siya rin talaga yung reason bakit ako talaga nandito and kung bakit din ako nagpapatuloy sa volleyball.”

During their exclusive interview with PUSH ABS-CBN, the ladies also shared some of their most memorable moments with their mothers. “I have something funny (to share). Kasi she’s a doctor and kahit na may maliit lang ako na korbo (jammed) ako sa finger, she would say, ‘O, you can’t play in the game’ and I’m like, ‘Mom, what? It’s just a finger!’ As a doctor and as a mom, she’s very worried all the time about my body, about my injury. But alam ko naman na kaya ko naman maglaro kahit masakit yung finger ko. But she would say na, ‘No, you can’t play.’ Sabi ko, ‘Wow! Daig mo pa yung coach! (laughs)’ Yung mga ganun, yun yung mga funny moments (namin),” Kianna recalled.

It was another funny childhood memory from her younger years as a volleyball player that Jolina admits is her favorite things to look back on with her mom, “Pag naglalaro ako ng volleyball, minsan tumatakas lang ako kasi before, ayaw niya akong paglaruin eh. Siguro mga nine years old ako, mga 10, ganyan. So tumatakas ako kasi passion ko talaga yung volleyball, gusto ko talaga siya. So may mga times na late na rin ako nakakauwi nun. Dumating din nung high school ako na parang hindi pa niya ako ganun kagusto mag-volleyball. Gusto niya study lang. Pero eventually, nakuha rin niya na ito talaga yung gusto ko. So yung mga times lang na yun na natatawa ako. Hanggang ngayon dala-dala ko yung memories na yun na tinatawanan na lang namin ng mama ko na dati sinusundo pa niya ako tapos ngayon nandito na ako sa pros.”
