<p>Known as the first ever winner of the drag reality competition <em>Drag Den Philippines</em> in 2023, Naia (real name Timothy Brian Black) has continued in her career as one of the country’s most inspiring drag performers. Of course, as his panganay, and growing up kind of feminine. In college, when I came out, it wasn&#x27;t perfect at all. So, my dad really taught me how to be tough. And taught me how to really push through things even though they were unpleasant. And I think ‘yun ‘yung pinupukpok niya sa ulo ko. Even though matigas din ulo niya; I think nagmana din ako sa kaniya. So, it&#x27;s weird ha. Kasi right now, he&#x27;s so supportive. We just had a really weird relationship growing up. And I told him na parang, I don&#x27;t wanna go inside my parents&#x27; room because alam ko there&#x27;s like a ghost. I really feel like a bad energy. And then of course, pinatulan niya. He was like, oh talaga. He got like a fake grenade, ganun. Boom! Sabi niya, ‘Okay, the ghost is gone!’ So parang, even though for me, it was just playful things. It was important that he validated my fear as opposed to, you know, being like, wala naman eh, that I was just imagining things. Because I think at the time, it really is my anxiety towards whatever. Because I was like a really anxious kid, I guess. And I was scared of a lot of things. Now, I&#x27;m not afraid of anything. So, thank you, Daddy. Wow, I just thought of that now. Nakaka-miss yung ano rin. That really makes me smile knowing that he validated my feelings at the time. At the time then, he was very like homophobic. When I won the show, they didn&#x27;t care na. Actually, afterwards, when I told them I was a drag queen, they were like, okay, that makes sense. Pero it makes sense na with who I am as a person. But I think after those years of hiding who I really was, I was able to savor those moments na I&#x27;m so happy that I can just go out like this na. For the younger self that I was, parang imposible ‘yun. And that wasn&#x27;t a reality. I think I didn&#x27;t have to come out, but there was a lot of resentment on their end for it. Like they didn&#x27;t accept that their kid was effeminate or whatever. And that really molded who I am now. I think after college, everything was easier. But before that, grade school, high school, I learned how to act really well. And I learned how to hide certain parts of myself. And I think in Pride Month now, dapat hindi. Dapat hindi na ganun,” she said. </p>
