Anthony Pangilinan imparted some advice on Bianca Gonzalez’s podcast Paano Ba To? during the height of the pandemic that remain relevant today.

Bianca reissued her conversation with the businessman back in November 2021, which she described as “insightful.”

Previously released as an audio episode, the host shared the video version of their virtual interview on her YouTube channel on Monday, June 2.

“I wanted to reshare this episode because there are so many nuggets of wisdom that I feel, lalo na ngayon, AI [artificial intelligence] is changing everything so so fast, as well as social media, andami pa rin nating matutunan that we can apply, I feel, whatever industry we’re in,” Bianca sai, explaining why it is still a must-watch.

Here are some of the life lessons Anthony shared:

Shaping a proper mindset

Anthony said that people should stop questioning the situation that they are in but rather focus on how they can properly respond to it.

“Dapat ibahin na raw natin ang pag-iisip natin,” he said. “The question is not ‘why is this happening?’ [It should be] ‘how should I be responding?’ We have to shift from ‘why it is happening?’ to ‘how should I be responding?’

“Stop thinking about the boundaries of what’s gonna happen. Start being mindful of the guidelines of how you will respond. I think that is the safest way of addressing changes,” he added.

Anthony related this to a story about a tennis player who despite delivering a record-breaking 51 aces still lost in a match up as his opponent’s focus was on how he’d manage to rise from the occasion.

Treating every circumstance as a gift

Anthony has learned to treat every circumstance he encounters in life as a gift, and he wishes to inspire others to do the same.

“It’s a struggle for me but I fight daily to tell myself: ‘every circumstance I am in is a gift.’ Good, bad or ugly, it’s a gift,” he said.

“If it won’t kill me, it will strengthen. It will stretch my capacity. It will make me thankful for what I have. Every circumstance is a gift,” he added.

Being open to changes

The businessman also encourages people to be open to changes. But in doing so, they should first determine what are the things that are “non-negotiable” for them.

“Alamin mo (kung) ano ba ang pinaka-importante sayo. Tapos ‘pag klaro na ‘yun, dapat bukas ka na sa ibang bagay at (sa) pagbabago,” he said.

Anthony acknowledges that some people find it difficult to “let go of too many things,” but he has a piece of advice:

“Never stay in one place, even when you’re so blessed, when your calling is telling you to go,” he said. But at the same time, never leave any situation because it’s so difficult when you’re called to stay.

Future-proofing career

Anthony provided Bianca with an acronym that perfectly covers how to future-proof careers. The acronym was S.O.L.I.D. which stands for support system, opportunity radar, leveraging, inner circle, and divine intervention.

“You [need to] have your support system,” he said. “Multiple streams, kung may main job ka, may sideline ka. Makakatulong  [na] meron kang support system.

He also gave emphasis on the importance of employability.

“It’s not lifetime employment that’s important but employability. Employability is the ability to get employed whenever you want it whenever you need it. And there’s only one key to employability, continuous improvement,” he elaborated.

The businessman also stressed on the importance of keeping the “opportunity radar” open.

“Opportunity radar, kailangan parating nakabukas,” he said. “Maybe I can’t grab this opportunity today but if anything happens, mukhang kakayanin ko ‘to. Kailangang may listahan ako at ina-update ko ‘yun.”

Anthony also highlighted leveraging or building networks or connections, but he warned:

“You have to have an idea of what your resources are. Sinong mga kakilala mo, sinong mga binigyan mo ng trabaho, sino yung mga tinulungan  mo kasi balang araw pwede mong takbuhan ‘yan,” he said.

The businessman also added that it’s important to build an inner circle which is composed of people who will serve as your mentors.

“People who have your ears, people who speak life to you, napakaimportante niyan,” he said.

Lastly, he emphasized the importance of seeking divine intervention to ensure a future-proof career.
