Nico Bolzico opens up about being an 'imperfect dad': 'I question myself every single day'

Nico Bolzico isn’t pretending he has fatherhood all figured out, and he’s said as much himself.In an interview with Bianca Gonzalez on her Paano Ba &#x27;To podcast, the Argentine businessman opened up about raising his two daughters, Thylane, whom the family calls Tili, and Maëlys, with wife Solenn Heussaff.He appeared on the podcast alongside first-time dad Mikael Daez.&quot;Every single day I ask myself, &#x27;Am I doing the right thing?&#x27; Especially, okay, so you have now the newborn&#x27;s challenges. But then the moment they start growing up, they will have their own personalities,&quot; he said.Tili, who is six and a half years old, has already given him plenty to think about. Nico said his eldest daughter refuses to simply follow instructions without a reason.&quot;Like Tili at six and a half. She&#x27;s almost a teenager. She treats me sometimes like &#x27;Where did it come from?&#x27; Like, you know, when you tell kids &#x27;Okay go do this, go pick this up for me or like go get me a glass of water.&#x27; They do it. My daughter is like, &#x27;Why?&#x27; She asks me why all the time,&quot; he said.Nico said he is still trying to find the right balance between being firm and giving his daughters the freedom to grow.&quot;And in my head, &#x27;Okay, should I be like a dictator that you have to do it because I&#x27;m your dad or should I do gentle parenting? But I want her to be confident and strong, but I also want her to listen to me and do what I&#x27;m telling her about. It&#x27;s like, what is this balance?&quot; he said.&quot;Like, okay, I don&#x27;t want her to be a brat, but I also don&#x27;t want to destroy her confidence because I want her to be an empowered woman to take over the world. So how do I do that? But at the same time, I have to tell her ten times. And then she asks &#x27;Why?&#x27;&quot; he added.He said simply telling Tili he is her father is not enough to get her to listen. Even his wife, Solenn Heussaff, he said, does not have all the answers.&quot;You need to explain to her why you&#x27;re asking what you&#x27;re asking. When you answer her, &#x27;Because I&#x27;m your dad, do it,&#x27; it doesn&#x27;t work. So every day I&#x27;m like, &#x27;Am I doing this right?&#x27; I talk to Solenn, and Solenn&#x27;s like, &#x27;I have no idea.&#x27; So it&#x27;s like, we&#x27;re both going through this teenage situation right now,&quot; he said.His younger daughter Maëlys, three, has added to the challenge by mirroring everything her older sister does.&quot;Maëlys, who is three years old, is super naughty – like super naughty – and copies her sister a hundred percent. So then I have two not listening to me and dictating what they want me to do for them,&quot; he said.Nico admitted his daughters know exactly how to get what they want from him.&quot;They know you melt for them. Yes. So they use that. They use that they know you&#x27;re so weak when they&#x27;re like, &#x27;Papa, por favor.&#x27; And I&#x27;m like &#x27;Okay, whatever. But don&#x27;t tell your mom, okay?&#x27;&quot; he said.On a more serious note, Nico said being present is the one thing he is certain about as a father, and he has built his schedule around it.&quot;I want my daughters to be good people and happy. That&#x27;s it. Those are my only two objectives. How to do it? I don&#x27;t know. I have no idea. Every day I ask myself how to do it. I do know one thing – that being present is important. You have to be there,&quot; he said.&quot;They will remember you when you&#x27;re there. When kids have these childhood issues that come back when they&#x27;re grown up, it&#x27;s because the parents were not there a lot of times or not there enough. Of course, parents have to work and all that. But being there in the right place for the important moments and trying to be as much time present with them,&quot; he added.Patience, he said, is still something he is working on. He noted that Tili, who speaks fluent Spanish, tends to become far more dramatic in that language, which tests him.&quot;I think I&#x27;m pretty good at being present. I really prioritize them. I really slowed down a lot since I have kids. I organize my days – when it comes to work or when it comes to socializing – based on their time at home. If they&#x27;re at home, for me, it&#x27;s a huge opportunity cost if I&#x27;m not there. I&#x27;m very serious about that,&quot; he said.&quot;Thylane speaks fluent Spanish, right? And then, when she speaks Spanish, she&#x27;s way more dramatic than when she speaks English. She becomes all this Latina. And then it&#x27;s like, &#x27;So I need not to, okay, don&#x27;t scream, don&#x27;t scream, don&#x27;t scream.&#x27; I don&#x27;t get aggressive, but I raise my voice,&quot; he said.He closed on a note of self-awareness, acknowledging that fatherhood is something he is still figuring out one day at a time.&quot;So it&#x27;s, I don&#x27;t know, it&#x27;s like, as a dad, I question myself every single day. I mean, you will never know if you are doing the right thing or the wrong thing. Try to accept your decisions. That&#x27;s what I do. But I think it&#x27;s – I&#x27;m a very imperfect dad. So it would be a long list of things I need to improve,&quot; he said.
