Leah SalterioWhen Asia’s Nightingale Lani Misalucha returned to the local concert scene, she made sure she did it with a vengeance.</div>With her one-night-only “Still, Lani” concert Thursday night at The Theater at Solaire, she delivered everything that she didn’t give local audiences for nearly two decades after she decided to be based in Las Vegas with her family – hubby Noli and two daughters.Misalucha emerged onstage resplendent in her Reneé Salud golden opera coat, opened the concert with “As If We Never Said Goodbye” from Andrew Lloyd Weber’s “Sunset Boulevard.”After a short spiel, she followed up with “Feeling Good,” then rendered songs she would perform as a lounge singer – Chaka Khan’s “Through the Fire,” Diane Reeves’ “Better Days,” Basia’s “Promises,” Anita Baker’s “Caught Up in the Rapture,” Natalie Cole’s “Miss You Like Crazy” and Karyn White’s “Super Woman.”Even when she started going solo and went mainstream, it took Misalucha quite a while to release a solo album. It was the late Bodjie Dasig, the husband of Odette Quesada, who repeatedly convinced Misalucha to record.After three attempts, Dasig got Misalucha to the recording studio and she released her debut album, “More Than I Should” in 1997.Misalucha paid tribute to Dasig and sang “Sana Dalawa ang Puso Ko” with Paeng Sudayan, the rarely rendered Dasig composition, “Sa Sakayan ng Jeep” with Leanne and Naara, and “Isang Ulit Man Lang,” with the young belter Shaira Opsimar.Misalucha was once also the “Multiplex Queen” recording every popular hit of female singers – from Celine Dion’s “It’s All Coming Back To Me Now” to Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Run To You” and Mariah Carey’s “Forever” – which made it to her set list.A much-anticipated moment came when Ben&amp;Ben’s Paolo and Miguel Benjamin joined her for a rendition of &quot;Vincent.&quot; The band then rendered “Courage,” followed by their hit “Leaves,” which they both dedicated to Misalucha.She also gave the audience a Lady Gaga original, “Abracadabra,” proof that she doesn’t just render timeless pieces but even latest pop tunes. “It still feels great trying out something new,” Misalucha said.Misalucha’s musical director, for the first time, was Toma Cayabyab, who was cute swaying to the beat and reading the notes from a huge iPad, while wielding the baton for the Manila Symphony Orchestra (MSO).Mounted by Backstage Manila with lawyer Nate Quijano and Chris Mananquil, “Still, Lani” had the all-girl trio Baihana as her back up, the Ateneo Chamber Singers as her choir, and a six-piece band.In the audience that night was National Artist for Music Ryan Cayabyab, and songwriters Vehnee Saturno, Jungee Marcelo, Trina Belamide and Jimmy Antiporda.Also seen were Nonoy Zuñiga, Dulce, Bianca Lapus, Tim Pavino, Pepe Herrera, designer Renee Salud,, Ida Henares, and Julius and Tintin Babao.With the Ateneo Chamber Singers, Misalucha crooned “Perhaps Love,” then belted out one of her newest recordings, “Timeless,” which she dedicated to her six grandchildren.She tirelessly performed for more than three hours onstage and she didn’t mind the time, more than making up from her absence from the live performance stage in the local scene.“Still, Lani” will tour the Philippines later this year and will also be staged abroad early next year.
