Ogie Alcasid hosts 9th edition of star-studded golf charity tournament

Photo by Dyan Castillejo, ABS-CBN News</div>Singer-songwriter Ogie Alcasid gathered Wednesday celebrities, business executives and golf enthusiasts for the ninth edition of his charity tournament, the Ogie Cup, at the Manila Golf and Country Club.Usually held in celebration of his birthday, this year&#x27;s edition marked a notable expansion, drawing not just friends and showbiz personalities but also leaders from the business community.“It was very stressful but [kaya] with the support of the participants obviously, our CEOs and presidents and officers of in the business community and the celebrities as well,” Alcasid told ABS-CBN News.“It&#x27;s a first time that I did this actually. Just friends and of course celebrities but now with our decision-makers. It&#x27;s all for a good cause so I&#x27;m so happy that they came and they&#x27;re buying in what we&#x27;re trying to do here,” he said.The event supported multiple beneficiaries, including Helping Hands Healing Hearts, World Vision, Khan Academy and the caddies of Manila Golf.“We&#x27;re trying to help everybody as much as we can, especially now the world is not the same yet. We&#x27;re not back to normal and doing something as frivolous as playing golf can be frowned upon but we made sure that it&#x27;s for a good cause and that we are not just having fun here. We&#x27;re trying to do something for the betterment of society as well,” Alcasid said.Among those who showed support was actor Derek Ramsey, who had nothing but praise for the host.“Great event! You know this guy is one of the kindest souls I&#x27;ve known. He&#x27;s a great guy, honest guy — one of the few friends I have in the industry,” Ramsey said.PBA star LA Tenorio, who joined the tournament for the first time, relished both the game and the company.“This is my first time. I enjoyed the golf even though it&#x27;s hot but first and foremost I just want to congratulate Kuya Ogie for the successful golf tournament,” he said.“Hopefully this is not the first and the last! I enjoyed a lot and I enjoyed the company also so hopefully I&#x27;ll see you guys again next year!” he added.Veteran actor and singer Boboy Garovillo, a regular participant, said he “was able to enjoy myself.”“There&#x27;s a lot of new people here; I&#x27;m one of the oldest here,” the Apo Hiking Society said in jest, before sharing his advice on staying young: “Don&#x27;t make problems out of little things. Keep smiling. Stay positive. That&#x27;s the best. The world is going crazy, don&#x27;t try to get involved.”Actor and entrepreneur Richard Yap, a frequent golfer, reflected on the lessons of the sport.“I play about two to three times a week,” he said. “It teaches you a lot about patience. It humbles you also. When you think you&#x27;re so good already, golf humbles you. It&#x27;s just like life.”Despite it being his first time joining the Ogie Cup, Yap said he had a great time.Music icon Gary Valenciano thoroughly enjoyed the round and super happy to support Alcasid for a great cause.“I played within my index so I&#x27;m okay and I enjoyed,” he said. “It&#x27;s for a cause.”Valenciano also shared that he will be hosting his own tournament soon.“I&#x27;m also having one on May 11, a Gary V invitational,” he said. “Mine would be for the Shining Light Foundation, a foundation that initially would help the kids of ministers who had given their life to the Lord… there&#x27;s nothing that can support the kids in going to school... that&#x27;s how it started. Now it&#x27;s blossomed into just helping children in need some are sick and what&#x27;s nice is that especially when it comes to education, you really see the before and after.”Beyond golf, Valenciano continues his advocacy through Face to Face, a campus talk initiative he began in 2018.“We&#x27;ve gone to 68 universities and campuses so far since 2018 including during the pandemic. We would do it on Zoom and the last one that I did was the farthest from Manila, which is Nueva Ecija, so it&#x27;s kind of branching out now to other areas. People have taken notice of the impact that it has on the students whether it&#x27;s 11th or 12th graders or juniors and graduating batches in college,” he shared.For Valenciano, golf events like these go beyond competition.“It&#x27;s not just about golf. You get to meet people, you get to network you get to build new relationships and I think it&#x27;s crucial because you&#x27;re all getting to know each other [while] doing something you all really enjoy.”On the leaderboard, Eric Tensuan emerged as Class B champion, while Ramsey topped Class A.While Ramsey was receiving his championship trophy, it was revealed by the hosts that he was a last-minute entry and still because of excellent golf skills he still won the top prize.Ramsey also won the special award for longest drive at 275 yards.&quot;He forgot to invite me,&quot; Ramsey joked.Alcasid replied laughing: &quot;No, I didn&#x27;t, I prayed to God. God please talk to Derek.&quot;The awarding ceremony was hosted by Valenciano, Ryan Bang, John Estrada and Martin Nievera, with Regine Velasquez-Alcasid joining him briefly on stage to cap off the eventAfter playing and hosting, Alcasid led a mini-concert, singing with Nievera, Michael V. and Randy Santiago.
