Simon Cowell admits he regrets his harsh judging style on 'American Idol': 'I'm not proud of it'

<p>Simon Cowell admitted that he is not proud of his judging style during his time on <em>American Idol.</em></p><p>In an interview on <em>The Interview</em> podcast of <em>The New York Times</em>, Simon reflected on his past behavior and acknowledged that there were instances he went too far when critiquing contestants.</p><p>&quot;I did realize I&#x27;d probably gone too far. I didn&#x27;t particularly like audition days because they&#x27;re long and boring. I would get fed up. And of course, out of a hundred nice comments, what are they going to use? They&#x27;re always going to use me in a bad mood. I got that. What can I say? I&#x27;m sorry,&quot; he remarked.</p><p>When asked what exactly he was apologizing for, he answered bluntly: &quot;Well, just being a dick.&quot;</p><p>Simon clarified, however, that his harshness was never intentional. &quot;I wasn&#x27;t trying to be a dick on purpose. All I wanted with these shows was to find successful artists to sign to the label. So when all these people were coming in and they couldn&#x27;t sing, we would say after 10 seconds, &#x27;You can&#x27;t sing.&#x27; Not, &#x27;You’re going to be brilliant,&#x27;&quot; he explained.</p><p>Despite the global success of the franchise, Simon confessed he is still uneasy about how he behaved on camera. &quot;I&#x27;m not proud of it, let&#x27;s put it that way. There is a massive opportunity: I am going to find a new boy band. If this goes wrong, it will be Simon Cowell has lost it,&quot; he said in the trailer for the docuseries.</p><p>The show will premiere on Netflix on December 10.</p>
