(DGPI) on Wednesday said it &quot;strongly opposes&quot; Senate Bill 2805, which seeks to &quot;strengthen and expand the mandate&quot; of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB). The bill, sponsored by Sen. Robinhood Padilla, allows for the inclusion of online streaming platforms in the MTRCB&#x27;s regulatory powers.In their statement, the DGPI says they support the classification of content to control access to minors and guide the parents on what children should watch.However, they &quot;strongly oppose the bill’s retention of the X-rating which bans exhibition of provocative or unorthodox content to adults who have the right to decide what they should or should not see.&quot;<div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/entertainment/showbiz/movies-series/2025/6/2/senate-oks-bill-allowing-mtrcb-to-regulate-online-streaming-platforms-2037">READ: Senate OKs bill allowing MTRCB to regulate online streaming platforms</a></div>The DGPI also believes that the bill &quot;impinges on a struggling local film industry.&quot;&quot;With the government’s other creative industries initiatives attempting to re-energize this sector, it is ironic that this bill seeks to sabotage those gains with its draconian provisions and seems set on cannibalizing what is left with these absurd acts of legislation,&quot; they said.&quot;There is no need to create a redundant new law such as SB 2805 that would further destroy content creators’ rights to free expression and viewers’ rights to free access to expression,&quot; the organization added.&quot;To reiterate, the DGPI stands against the expansion of MTRCB’s jurisdiction into the online streaming space because it is largely a private viewing experience, and does not count as public exhibition, and deplores this attempt by the MTRCB to discriminate against those in the audio-visual sector that encompasses film, television, and streaming.&quot;In an earlier statement, the MTRCB noted that the House of Representatives has yet to pass its version of the bill.&quot;Whatever is ultimately approved by Congress and the President, we will implement it,&quot; said the statement attributed to MTRCB chairperson Lala Sotto. &quot;We wish to emphasize that while the amendments include OCCS and SVODs in the coverage of MTRCB, the Board does not seek to rate or review these materials,&quot; it added. &quot;There is no prior constraint or a mandatory review before content is shown.&quot;&quot;In the end, it is our collective hope that any amendment should be firmly anchored on the principle that the protection of children is a top priority.&quot; -- from a report by MJ Felipe, ABS-CBN News
