With glasses and well-groomed short hair, the Oscar nominee looks like he could be heading to a philosophy seminar, not fielding questions about his latest film. It’s a chilly December morning in Los Angeles, but Chalamet is visibly warm. He’s energized and buoyed by the news that &quot;Marty Supreme&quot; has earned him another Golden Globe nomination, one he will go on to win weeks later — his first. He greets me with easy familiarity, recalling that we spoke just a week earlier at one of the film’s receptions. The exchange feels less like a checkpoint in a press tour than a continuation of an ongoing conversation, which is fitting for an actor whose recent work seems less episodic than cumulative. In the span of a remarkably short window, Chalamet has played Willy Wonka, Paul Atreides, Bob Dylan, and Marty Mauser. It’s a run so compressed it almost resists narrative framing. When I ask how playing Marty challenged or refined his approach as an actor, he shares some tricks of the trade.<div>“I think every role has its own challenges,” he says. “If I’m going to answer that really truthfully, the actual labor put into a role is what’s most challenging.” He talks about memorizing dialogue, understanding a script’s arc, and navigating the practical disorientation of shooting out of sequence. And I pointed it out because I want someone to point it out.” He adds the last line with a smile.It’s an unusually candid admission of ambition plainly stated. When I suggest that history may one day look back on this period and recognize how singular that run was, he nods without hesitation. “I agree,” he says. “And I like that you speak as hyperbolically as I do.” He laughs, but Chalamet is not shrinking from the scale of the moment.Notably, though, he does not frame that ambition as competitive. During the &quot;Dune: Part Two&quot; junket, when I asked about acting opposite Austin Butler in their climactic showdown, Chalamet resisted the language of rivalry altogether. “I think competition is too strong a word,” he said at the time. “When you see people, your peers, demand the most of themselves, it makes you demand the most of yourself.” What matters to him, then as now, was his work sharpening itself in proximity to other serious work.That inward focus surfaces again when we talk about Marty Supreme’s final match, the moment when Marty finally gets what he has been chasing. Chalamet describes filming the scene in Japan two months after principal photography wrapped, following an extended stretch promoting A Complete Unknown. “That felt triumphant,” he says. “It felt like a culmination.” But triumph, in his telling, carries an undertow.<div>He compares Marty’s experience to that of Olympians who reach the top only to feel unmoored afterward. “You read about Olympians that win a gold medal and then fall into a massive depression… because there’s almost nothing at the top of the hill.” Marty, like many real-life athletes of the 1970s, wasn’t chasing money or fame. “There was no pot of gold,” Chalamet says. “Their passion was for what they were doing and exclusively so.” <img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1770366668014TIMOTHEE CHALAMET 2 Courtesy of A24.jpg" style="width:960px" class="fr-fic fr-dib" width="960"/>Timothée Chalamet in &#x27;Marty Supreme.&#x27; Courtesy of A24</div>It’s a striking parallel for an actor in the midst of his own ascent. While discussing A Complete Unknown over Zoom last year, Chalamet reflected on embodying Bob Dylan without knowing what the final film would ultimately become. “There’s a script you read, a script you shoot, and the movie they edit,” he said then.When I ask how he stays curious as an artist, Chalamet answers quickly. “Oh, everything, everything. I&#x27;m lucky that I have an artist soul,” he says. Then he catches himself. “I don&#x27;t want even to let people in on that so they can crack jokes or whatever. I was born curious about the world. So the only thing that would remove my spirit of curiosity would be, frankly, things where I&#x27;m over-explaining myself.”As our conversation winds down, I ask if there’s anything he hopes to preserve from this period of his life. He tells a story about his Dune costar Oscar Isaac speaking to Juilliard students about how youth often possesses an instinctive clarity that experience can dull. “When you’re young… when you’re ambitious and you’re dreaming big and you’re not self-conscious by way of age and what society tells you,” he says.What he wants to preserve, he explains, is a youthful relationship to life itself, not just to art.  “If I want to preserve anything, it&#x27;s the youthful attitude towards my life, not only in the arts, but just towards life. You look at the human physical body and how it ages, it literally atrophies, it shrinks. So your mental is going to reflect that naturally. But if you can somehow buck the grain, not in a competitive American way, but in a holistic way? That&#x27;s my dream. But who knows? Maybe I&#x27;ll be— Who knows?”
