“It’s quite stressful performing in that way, almost auditioning to be this other version of yourself, auditioning for approval. And it can take its toll,” Riz Ahmed, the Oscar- and Emmy-winning actor, states plainly while talking about his character, an actor chasing to play James Bond, in Amazon Prime Video’s “Bait.” “It can lead you to spiral, and it can actually be quite funny to watch. And so that&#x27;s really what the show is stemming from. Amazon MGM Studios</div>Across two conversations — through an international press conference that I moderated from Los Angeles and a separate interview while both actors were in London — Ahmed and his co-star Guz Khan kept returning to that same tension between the self we curate and who we really are in private. “Bait,” a six-part British series created by and starring Ahmed, follows Shah Latif, a struggling British-Pakistani actor navigating the industry, his family, and the cultural weight of representation while orbiting a role that symbolizes ultimate acceptance. The show moves easily between comedy, drama, and action because the life it reflects rarely stays in one lane for long.During the press conference, Ahmed described what led them to the show’s title. “Bait,” he explained, is British slang for something obvious, unsubtle, almost embarrassingly on-the-nose. In the show’s writers’ room, it became a kind of internal shorthand, a way to dismiss ideas that felt too eager to declare themselves. Yet the more they used it, the more it seemed to hold. What’s more, the word stretches across meanings: online trolling, loyalty in Urdu, home in Arabic and Hebrew, even the mechanics of a trap in a thriller. A role, or the validation attached to it? Ahmed admitted the distinction is rarely clean. </div>“Sometimes we’re chasing the clout, we’re chasing validation,” he said, reflecting on his own motivations with disarming candor. The balance, he suggested, is always shifting and can depend on the day, the project, and the version of yourself that shows up. He explains that the work that lasts and feels true tends to come from a place that’s less concerned with applause but that is sometimes hard to attain. In a pivotal scene, his character is shown berating himself in the mirror after a failed audition. Ahmed admits that he’s done that in real life. “My inner critic, I had a very strange relationship with, because on the one hand, it motivates me, keeps me on my toes. That imposter syndrome keeps me working harder, but it can actually be very damaging. It can spiral out of control and it can just exhaust you.”Khan approaches that same tension from a different angle. He described the industry as a constant negotiation between commerce and expression, where identity can feel like both asset and obstacle. The only stable footing, in his view, comes from authenticity as a kind of internal compass. If the work is honest, he suggested, it will find its audience. The challenge lies in holding onto that honesty while everything around you encourages performance.There is an ease between the two men that softens the weight of those ideas. Khan spoke about the relief of working with someone he trusts. Ahmed, in turn, framed that dynamic in more emotional terms, describing Khan’s presence on set as expansive. The generous atmosphere that Khan created, Ahmed says, invited better work through openness instead of pressure.That sense of openness runs through the show’s more pointed observations about representation. In one scene, Shah is mistaken for another actor, a moment played for laughs that lands with an undercurrent of reality for Hollywood’s brown actors. When I brought it up, Ahmed leaned into the humor first. He admitted he has been mistaken for Dev Patel and chooses not to correct it. “I don&#x27;t correct people, because I&#x27;m a big fan of Dev&#x27;s, so I just say: ‘Yeah, no, absolutely, that was me.’ And just try and take so much of that glory as I can,” he says. The anecdote draws a laugh, though it also hints at the narrow lanes through which visibility has historically been filtered. Social media sharpens that divide, turning self-presentation into a kind of ongoing audition. The need to perform for others becomes constant. It is exhausting, occasionally absurd, and, as Ahmed noted, sometimes even funny in its extremity.Khan, characteristically, finds humor in the smaller, more everyday versions of that same phenomenon. When asked about the different ways people pronounce his name, he revealed the code-switching reason for the variations. He says, “When I&#x27;m with people from different parts of the country, being in the West Midlands, we say &#x27;Gooz Khan,&#x27; there&#x27;s a little &#x27;oo&#x27; in it. But you come to London and everybody&#x27;s slightly different, and they say &#x27;Gus.&#x27; And it&#x27;s like, do I have the energy or the blood sugar levels to correct people all the time? Probably not. Say what you want, bro, and it is what it is. It&#x27;s close enough.”Just like their show, there is no tidy resolution offered, just a mirror held up high for anyone wanting to examine closer. What “Bait” seems to suggest is that awareness is a good start. Ahmed’s words linger because they resist simplification. The stress, the humor, the contradiction all coexist, forming something that feels uncomfortably familiar. In “Bait,” that tension becomes narrative. In real life, it remains ongoing, an audition without a final call.
