Sofronio Vasquez's family elated after his historic win in The Voice US

MANILA -- As the nation celebrates the historic win of Sofronio Vasquez in The Voice US, his family and relatives are also rejoicing.According to Sofronio’s mom Aida, they were jumping for joy and screaming when her son&#x27;s name was announced as the grand winner.“Yung pagbanggit ng pangalan ni Sofronio, lahat kami nagsigawan at nag-iyakan. Sabi ng iba, pag Pilipino daw hindi raw mananalo sa Amerika. Nag-iiyakan kami,” says Aida.In an interview with ABS-CBN News hours after the announcement, Aida shared that being a singer has always been Sofronio&#x27;s dream.“Maliit pa si Sof, mga 5 years old, mahilig talaga siya mag-kanta. May minus one pa kami, ang hilig niyang kantahin ay &#x27;yung pangmatanda na kanta na ‘Killing Me Softly” paulit ulit niyang kantahin &#x27;yan.”Sofronio would always line up and audition in a lot of ABS-CBN singing competitions, until he passed in It’s Showtime’s &quot;Tawag ng Tanghalan.&quot;  “Yung sumali siya sa &#x27;Tawag ng Tanghalan,&#x27; &#x27;yung tatay niya ayaw talaga, kasi si Sof magre-review sana ng dentistry dito sa Maynila, biglang pumasok sa isip niya, pumila siya sa TNT. Sabi ng tatay niya ‘Lang, ano ba talaga ang gusto mo - Dentist ba o maging singer?’ Sabi niya, &#x27;papa bigyan mo lang ako ng chance, i-ano ko rin &#x27;yang dentistry,&#x27;” Aida said.Right now, Aida is still eagerly and patiently waiting to speak with her son, who hasn’t messaged or called yet.“Hindi pa hanggang ngayon. Sabi ng brother niya, three days pa siya doon dahil sa dami ng interviews. Nagchat na ako sa kanya, tatawag na lang daw siya bukas ng madaling araw.”Having Michael Buble as Sofronio’s coach was a big help, according to Aida.  &quot;Masaya ako na naging coach siya kay Sofronio, sabi ni Sof mabait siya para na ding kuya ni Sof siya.&quot;When asked what her message for her son is, Aida said: “&#x27;Lang, alam mo talaga, &#x27;Lang, na proud na proud kami sa&#x27;yo. Love talaga kita. Mga pinsan mo, kapatid mong si JR, pati na ang dalawang aso sumigaw talaga para sa&#x27;yo. Ang dami namin, masayang-masaya kami sa&#x27;yo. Hindi namin maipaliwanag ang aming saya. Basta, alam mo na ‘yan.”This was the only time an Asian singer won the top prize in The Voice US after 26 seasons.
