More of the Santiago Brothers’ shady plans begin to unfold in “What Lies Beneath”

<p>The suspense begins right away as Lucas (JM de Guzman) narrowly escapes being stabbed and strangled by Dimaano, who is seeking revenge for what he believes was Lucas’ role in the burning of his business.</p><p>When Lucas gains the upper hand, Dimaano lashes out, claiming the fire was a form of retaliation by Lucas’ wealthy affiliates because he refused to be intimidated by their threats.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>Lucas considers withdrawing from his affiliates’ greedy tactics</strong></div><p>After the armed assault, Lucas (JM de Guzman) visits an abandoned, burned building, presumably Dimaano’s. As he stands outside, gazing at the ruins, another man arrives and begins a conversation about the opening of Lucas’ business in Amurao.</p><p>Instead of exchanging pleasantries, Lucas reprimands the man, questioning how much more they could need after endangering the lives of others. Realizing that Lucas is referring to Dimaano, the man laughs, explaining that a compromise had already been offered, with his boss giving Dimaano a large sum of compensation, which he refused.</p><p>The man points out Lucas’ hypocrisy, explaining in more detail how Lucas is involved in the plans for the land where Dimaano’s business was built. Not denying it, Lucas can only express his intention to withdraw from his affiliation with them, but the man warns him not to make a mess, even going so far as to hint that Edong (Jake Cuenca) could be harmed in prison.</p><p>Lucas becomes angry, insisting that they did not need to involve his brother in this mess.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>Alice insists the intruder was Scott or one of his men</strong></div><p>Overwhelmed with panic, Alice (Janella Salvador) wakes up with Beth (Charlie Dizon) calming her. </p><p>Remembering how Rose, their helper, had led her to a bathroom to hide from the intruder, she inevitably replays fragments of that night, including her repeated screams as if someone will take her son, Seth (Rhys Stevens), away—up until the car crash that killed her father.</p><p>Confused and worried, Beth asks if the intruder was really after Seth, suggesting that it might be the same man who chased Chloe (Jewel Milag) and Joshua (Lawrence dela Cruz).</p><p>Resolute in her speculation, Alice says it’s undoubtedly Scott (Mark Neumann), her husband, who found out she brought Seth to the Philippines without telling him—and may now be hiring people to get Seth back.</p><p>A skeptical Beth grows more outspoken, questioning how far Scott could possibly go—going so far as to confront children outside Alice’s care, like Chloe and Joshua.</p><p>The police continue investigating the incident, but Alice can only remember the man’s silhouette and eerie laugh. Perplexed, her Uncle Edward (Joel Molina) questions the suspect’s intentions, and when the police ask for CCTV access, he notices Alice’s trembling hands.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>Something is brewing with the Santiago Brothers</strong></div><p>Lucas (JM de Guzman) visits Edong (Jake Cuenca) in prison. Edong admits it, not denying that he threatened her and the others, but instead saying that he has forgiven their past wrongdoings. Growing frustrated, Lucas warns him that if the prison finds out he had access to the phone, everything he has worked for—and all their plans—would be wasted. </p><p>Edong assures Lucas that he can stand on his own. After years of enduring abuse in prison, learning the system and hierarchy, and strengthening himself, he has finally learned to fight back.
