After a series of almost incessant chases, confrontations, and catfights, the fight for the custody of Grace, the titular character in “Saving Grace: The Untold Story,” impressively portrayed by up-and-coming child star Zia Grace, is finally over.

In the end, neither her biological mother, Sarah Banaag (Jennica Garcia), nor her “abductor”-turned-Mama, Anna Sarmiento (Julia Montes), were able to have her under their wing since both of them got incarcerated due to the different charges filed against them. Grace, meanwhile, was put up for adoption and eventually found a family who provided not just her needs but also showered her with genuine love and care.

But before we were able to reach the bittersweet “The Last Hope” finale of this well-loved primetime series, we’d witnessed the obstacles that Anna and Grace, as well as the people helping them to get through their situation, had to hurdle before attaining the peace they’d all been yearning for.

Following the heartbreaking demise of Miranda (Sharon Cuneta) due to her illness and the shocking surrender of Anna to the authorities, the finale week commenced with Grace bravely taking the witness stand. This was after the judge nodded to the petition of the defense team, led by Anna’s sister-cum-lawyer Jessica (Elisse Joson), to allow Grace to testify in front of the court as their witness, following the little girl’s astonishing claim that Sarah told her that she’s already giving her up to Anna.

At the stand, Grace revealed the true nature of her relationship with both Anna and Sarah, exposing how the former became a more bona fide mother as she took really good care of her compared to the latter, who neglected her, making her unfit to become a mother. She even showed the wounds and bruises that she got from being severely battered by Sarah and Chito (Christian Bables), as well as related all the shortcomings and other nasty things that her mother had done and said to her, which made her doubt her love for her.

Anna and Grace then went on to have a heartwarming interaction after that court session, wherein Grace told her all the good things that had been happening to her at the child services shelter and asked her to come with her. However, Anna declined it, telling her that she was already strong and brave enough to go on her own, so she didn’t need her anymore. On the other hand, Sarah told her lawyer to do everything she could for Grace to be returned to her, as well as to stop the authorities from investigating her for possible child abuse charges against her.

Their candid moment was witnessed by Jessica, who also happened to be Julius’ ex-fiancée. She assured Anna that she was just fine and that she had already let him go even though she still loved him. She even convinced her to give Julius a second chance since she firmly believed that the universe allowed their paths to intertwine again because they were really the ones meant for each other.

Julius and Jessica had the chance to talk with one another again about the process that he would have to go through in order to fulfill his wish of adopting Grace, as well as their relationship. They asked for each other’s forgiveness, with Jessica asking Julius if it was possible for them to become friends again.

Upon learning from her lawyer that a warrant of arrest would be issued to her, Sarah immediately devised an escape plan involving Chito. Unfortunately for them, a surprise inspection was conducted at the detention cell, and Chito was caught using a cellphone. As Oscar was able to confirm through Julius that it was indeed Sarah who he had been contacting, he went to Chito and was able to successfully lure him into confessing about his partner’s plan and whereabouts.

As Sarah went on with her evil scheme of taking Grace with her by breaking into the children’s center, little did she know that Anna was actually already on her way to save Grace from her as well. This was after Anna was able to escape from the two jail guards escorting her to the courthouse for her final hearing that day. The two women had an altercation, which resulted in Sarah losing consciousness after being tackled by Anna, and the latter running away with Grace anew.

It was revealed afterwards that it wasn’t only Grace whom Anna took with her at the house that her late mom, Miranda, had bought for her to serve as their hideout while they were preparing to leave for Hong Kong, but she also abducted Sarah. Anna relayed her grand plan to Sarah of returning Grace to the shelter and waiting until she would be put under the care of a good foster family before she would call the police to report their exact location and they would both surrender—which Sarah, of course, fervently objected to.

Just when Anna and Grace were about to go back to the shelter the following day, Sarah managed to escape and stop them. An intense fight ensued between them as Anna tried to stop Sarah from completely getting ahold of Grace despite being stabbed by her in the abdomen. It was during their confrontation scene wherein Sarah opened up about her traumatic past that made her the kind of mother that she had been, while Anna gave her a “real talk” that triggered Sarah to strangle her.

Before Sarah could completely kill Anna and run away again, the police came several minutes after Grace was able to contact them and arrested her. Meanwhile, Anna was immediately rushed to the hospital by Julius, and she asked him to take care of Grace on her behalf.

The “Last Hope” finale

Anna turned out to be alive and had the chance to personally bid farewell to Grace as the childcare agency was able to finally find a good and compatible foster family for the latter. Child abuse charges were filed against Sarah and Chito, with him getting a taste of his own medicine as his inmates beat him up, just like what he did to Grace. The same thing happened to Sarah on her first day in prison, which seemingly made her remorseful of her cruel acts against her daughter, as she cried while looking at Grace’s photo.

Meanwhile, Grace was blessed to be adopted by a loving couple who provided her a good and comfortable life that she truly deserved and dreamed of. Nonetheless, she still had not forgotten her Mama Anna, whom she would always remember every time she saw a flock of birds flying together.

On the other hand, Anna recounted some of her unforgettable moments with her former ward as she listened to the voice recording of her singing “Ang Mga Ibon Na Lumilipad” and browsed through her notebook filled with drawings of her favorite things and people, which were both handed to her by Grace before they parted ways. She also made her time in the penitentiary productive by creating handicrafts and teaching her fellow inmates until her emancipation years later. On the first day of her liberation, Anna was warmly welcomed by Helena, Julius, and Grace, who was already a teenager.

Ever since it was announced in mid-2024 that ABS-CBN Studios would produce the Filipino adaptation of the hit Japanese drama “Mother,” which would be entitled “Saving Grace,” through Dreamscape Entertainment, it was already met with excitement by avid Kapamilya fans.

The thrill further escalated when the line-up of cast was unveiled, with Julia Montes and Sharon Cuneta leading the stellar ensemble, and Janice de Belen, Sam Milby, Jennica Garcia, Christian Bables, Eric Fructuoso, and Elisse Joson joining them in the top bill.

These stars, along with the supporting cast members and guest actors, were able to prove everyone’s presumption that it was going to be another sure-fire series, for they indeed delivered top-notch and commendable performances through their respective characters, which contributed to the beauty of the series.

Julia was once again able to prove why she’s one of the Kapamilya royalties as she showcased her astounding versatility and impeccable acting chops through her notable portrayal of Anna. The same goes with Sharon, who proved that she wouldn’t be called the “Megastar” for nothing as she astonished us with both her kontrabida and protagonist facets as Miranda Valdez. Janice also hit us hard with her portrayal of Helena.

Jennica, Christian, Aya Fernandez (who portrayed Miranda’s rival, Ashley), and Mary Joy Apostol (who played Princess, the obnoxious younger sister of Anna) all impressed us with how they didn’t fail in pressing our anger buttons through their effective depictions of their antagonistic characters. The performances of Eric, Sam, and Elisse were also remarkable, as their characters in this series were indeed different from the previous ones they did in their past projects. Sophia Reola, Adrian Lindayag, and the other supporting cast members had admirable performances, too.

Of course, we would not miss mentioning child star Zia Grace, who absolutely did a great job in her portrayal of the titular character, which was apparently her acting debut. She succeeded in captivating us with her cuteness, effervescence, eloquence, and dramatic flair, making her befitting of the role.

Meanwhile, despite only having a cameo appearance at the end of the series, “Pinoy Big Brother Gen 11” alumna Kai Montinola still caught our attention not only with her glowing splendor but also by her good acting.

As we followed the journey of the once-emotionally distant teacher Anna and the wide-eyed pupil with behavioral issues Grace as they ran away from those people hunting them and at the same time found their ways to each other’s hearts, we were able to obtain plenty of takeaways that apply to real life.

With the series featuring different kinds and stories of mothers, it has demonstrated to us the real essence of motherhood through Anna, Sarah, Miranda, and Helena. It reminded us that being a real mom isn’t just about giving birth and raising a child and providing all their needs and wants, but showering them with the tender loving care and unconditional support that they need and deserve, as well as teaching and molding them into the person we wish them to be as they grow old.

While we were divided on who between Anna and Sarah is the rightful mother of Grace, as well as whether or not Miranda deserved to be Anna’s mom despite what she had done to her, we can all perhaps agree that each of them is still a mother in their own right.

Aside from being an epitome of what mothers should be, Anna is also a great testament to why teachers are considered our nation’s so-called “unsung heroes.” Well, that’s because, if not all, many of them are willing to go beyond their sworn duties and job descriptions just to make sure that their students, who have considered them their second parents, are not only doing good in school but also at home and in their other personal affairs.

Meanwhile, Grace’s story is proof that we may not be able to choose the family we were born to, yet we can pick the people whom we want to consider as family. She may not have obtained the tender loving care, attention, and warmth that she had been yearning for from her real mom, yet she was still blessed to have found and felt the genuine affection of a mother and even of a family from Anna and the people who helped her get away from her abusive parents and harrowing plight.

And lastly, the main characters have reminded us that—time and time again—letting go is a great act of genuine love. While we were made to believe that we should fight for something or someone that we hold dear to our hearts, the time would come when we would have to make the tough decision of setting them free not just for their sake, but for our own as well. Just like what Miranda did when she gave her daughter up for adoption, as well as when Anna decided to finally stop running away to let Grace live freely, although doing so would send her to jail.

Letting go is not a sign of weakness or defeat but rather of strength, as we opt to sacrifice our own welfare and happiness just to see whoever we love thrive, be happy, and move forward in life even if we are no longer part of it.

Apart from the story, performances, and the takeaways, another thing that we loved about this teleserye is the bravery of its runners to tackle and highlight the pressing and ever-relevant issues of child and domestic abuse and craft a well-written and impressively helmed narrative regarding these. So, kudos to Dreamscape Entertainment, especially to Team Saving Grace led by brilliant directors FM Reyes and Dolly Dulu, for this another noteworthy masterpiece.
