Shay Mitchell gets 'You' co-star Penn Badgley to try halo-halo

<p>MANILA -- Some people may not know yet but Shay Mitchell, who is one of the lead stars of the new Netflix series “You,” actually has Filipino roots.</p><p>The Hollywood actress has a Filipino mom, who left the Philippines to live abroad at the age of 19. Mitchell has been to the country more than once, her current visit being the third time.</p><p>Hence, it was just logical for her to be asked where she plans to bring her “You” co-star Penn Badgely who is also in Manila with her to promote the show.</p><div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="https://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/2019/life/01/15/20190115_shayy_penn.jpg?fbclid=IwAR2ZuIMWjhywjq1ShCO_Z5S4l5AAATzQLtCd6Keomp7mR-1MnCbLMY3hyd4"/><figcaption>Netflix’s new original series “You” stars Penn Badgley and Shay Mitchell during a press conference held at The Peninsula Manila in Makati on January 14, 2019. <em>George Calvelo, ABS-CBN News</em></figcaption></figure></div><p>“I wish [I could bring him around] but we don’t have a lot of time here,” she said in a roundtable interview on Monday. “I can only send up food up to his hotel room. Here’s pan de sal. Here’s pancit.”</p><p>Mitchell, however, admitted that she herself “messed up” the first time she ordered Filipino food upon her arrival.</p><p>“I had to ask my cousin the other day. I ordered pancit canton but I didn’t want that. I wanted pancit bihon. I ordered lumpiang ubod but that wasn’t what I wanted. I wanted lumpiang shanghai. So now, I am going to order pancit bihon and lumpiang shanghai. I want it fried. When they gave it to me, I was like, what is this?” she said, laughing.</p><p>Prior to meeting local and international journalists on Monday, Mitchell had Badgley try the popular Filipino dessert called “halo halo.”</p><blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p dir="ltr" lang="en">Why.. halo-halo there. I don’t do much of the adobo, but I like the sauce on rice. I won’t do the purple egg or the egg that hasn’t hatched yet. That’s a challenge. I am only half Filipino when it comes to that because the other half is like, ‘No sister,’” she said.</p><div><strong>LEA SALONGA’S COUSIN</strong></div><p>Meanwhile, Mitchell also revealed during the interview that she and Lea Salonga are actually cousins.</p><p>She made this revelation when she was asked to share one of her favorite behind-the-scene moments with her co-stars while working on “You.”</p><p>“You know, I think the fact that the other girls are obsessed with Broadway and musical theaters, Penn and I not so much, my second cousin is Lea but I don’t share the same talent in voice as she does. I’m honest about it. I don’t love it. We just don’t share that. But I can appreciate her voice. In &#x27;Aladdin,&#x27; hello I love that! But Penn and I would always just be funny on set like (sings) ‘Hi Penn, how are you?’ ‘Shay, I’m great.’ We joke around.” We had the best time on set,” she added.</p><p>While the others are always talking about a new musical that they just saw, Mitchell said she and Badgley often end up just talking about other things.</p><p>Aside from meeting local and international journalists on Monday, Mitchell and Badgley are also set to hold a fan event at Greenbelt 5 on Tuesday. </p><p>The two stars play Joe and Peach, respectively, on “You,” which first season is now streaming on Netflix.</p>
