<p>A New York-based Filipino pastry artist inspired by Catriona Gray’s nationalism spent three days creating his tribute to the Miss Universe winner, resulting in a lifelike display cake which he hopes to personally hand to the beauty queen.</p><div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img realistic painting of Gray’s face, and a three-dimensional impression of her signature side-swept hair, topped with an edible recreation of her iconic crown.</p><p>The three-day process, Uy told ABS-CBN News through e-mail, involved “fondanting, painting her face using edible materials, making of the Mikimoto crown using sugar paste, and covering the cake board with marbled fondant, edible Mikimoto crown. The parts were so fragile that they kept on breaking every time I assembled them,” he said.</p><p>Uy, who is based in New York for work and postgraduate studies, is hoping to personally deliver the cake to Gray, whose Miss Universe reign happens to be headquartered in the same city.</p><p>“Creating the cake was basically to pay tribute to someone who has inspired millions of people including myself. Cat is a role model not just to me but also to every Filipino who dreams of a better nation, united as one. At the time, Uy made headlines with his handpainted macarons depicting Wurtzbach. pastry art, graduated with a Fine Arts degree from the University of the Philippines. After pursuing a diploma course in baking and pastry arts, he clinched an internship at Maison Kayser USA, known for its “authentic artisanal boulangerie.”</p><p>Realizing a dream, Uy then had an internship under celebrity pastry chef Ron Ben-Israel, the former “Sweet Genius” host and one of the judges in Food Network’s “Cake Wars.”</p><p>Currently, Uy is setting sights on getting a business administration degree, saying he hopes to open his own cake shop in the future.</p><div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="https://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/2019/news/01/16/2019116-boy.jpg"/><figcaption>Miko Kaw Hok Uy poses during the opening of a New York art exhibit, where he showcased his watercolor paintings. <em>Instagram: @mikokawhokuy</em></figcaption></figure></div><p>Already, Uy has a growing following on social media, as he continues to share both the process and final product of his paintings, whether on paper or on cake. His tribute to Gray, in particular, has already circulated among pageant fans and has drawn praise for its painstaking details.</p><p>“I feel overwhelmed by everyone’s reaction,” he said. “It feels really great when people appreciate your work. It keeps you motivated and inspired to improve your craft. I feel ike I won Miss Universe too!”</p>
