MANILA – Miss Universe judge Sushmita Sen, who was the titleholder in 1994, admitted she was impressed with how France’s Iris Mittenaere answered the final question at the 65th edition of the international pageant which she won on Monday.

Sen said Mittenaere easily became her top pick to win because of her “very specific and very lovely answer.”

“Miss France had this incredible accent. She couldn’t speak English properly but we liked the fact that she expressed herself very well, she answered the question directly and the fact that she is a new role model for women who are beautiful,” she said.

As part of the top three, Mittenaere was asked about the biggest failure she had in her life and the lessons she learned from the experience. She replied by sharing that the story about her failed first try at medical school.

Sen believes Mittenaere is “professionally very, very adept at taking on the world in a whole new direction.”

Asked what is her piece of advice for the new Miss Universe, Sen said: “Keep it real. There will be a lot of pressure to become a Barbie doll. Keep it real. People love beauty that is approachable and that can impact lives and inspire people for a very long time.”

ON PHILIPPINE BET MAXINE MEDINA

Meanwhile, Sen also shared her insights about the performance of Philippine bet Maxine Medina in the Miss Universe pageant.

“You have to understand that Maxine was under a lot of pressure. I could see the pressure because every time she walked onto stage, Philippines just erupted at the stadium. That will be a beautiful memory for her,” she said.

As for Medina’s answer in the Q&A segment, Sen wishes the Filipina beauty had spoken in Tagalog.

Although Medina did not win, Sen is optimistic about what’s in store for her in the future.

“I remember Charlene’s beauty. That to me is the Filipino beauty. It has come such a long way. Pia is international and Maxine has the potential. She will make the Philippines very proud,” she said.

Medina made it to the top six of the international pageant.
