MANILA -- Malabon has a bustling food scene that highlights not only pancit Malabon, but also some new takes on Pinoy classics.

Benny’s Lounge, found off the JP Rizal Extension in Malabon, belongs to the second group, serving modern tweaks on beloved Filipino dishes in a relaxed setting.

This translates to a pub-lounge al-fresco area where musical performances are regularly enjoyed. Indoors, Benny’s Lounge has a more homey vibe, welcoming diners with Star Wars art on the walls, and the highlight of the interiors, a charming book-lined nook at one end. It’s a space that can make any one of any age feel comfortable, whether you’re dining for lunch or dinner, or drinking with your friends.

As per its website, the restaurant describes itself as being passionate about food. The menu has a variety of dishes from international fare like pastas, burgers, and pizzas, as well as dishes suited for family-style eating, rice bowls for a quick fix, and of course, pulutan for the drinking crowd.

Here are some of our favorites.

1. Benny’s Belly

While there’s the Boneless Crispy Pata, this author much preferred the Benny’s Belly. With meat and fat beautifully rendered and an exterior that’s crispy and puffed up with little air pockets, to be dipped in a homemade liver sauce, or a spicy sinamak, Benny’s Belly will give you a happy belly whether you eat it with rice, or as a beer match option.

2. Special Lumpiang Sariwa

Normally, lumpiang sariwa translates to something light in the tummy. Benny’s Lounge flips that idea on its head by creating this dish. Because while it has the requisite ubod (heart of palm), this lumpiang sariwa is also filled with chopped lechon and two kinds of chicharon (baboy and bulaklak), giving you a sinful bite of sweet and soft from the ubod, different textures and flavors from the many pork elements, as well as peanut-soy goodness from the sauce.

3. Special Kare-Kare

For something more saucy, there’s the Special Kare-Kare. With a peanut sauce tasting just like how mom would make it, this dish comes with all the works! Besides the requisite veggies, it has beef, beef tripe, oxtail, as well as beef cheek and snout. All of these beef parts provide tasty gelatinous bits that together with Benny’s Lounge’s sweetish bagoong will have you reaching for multiple cups of rice.

4. Pizza Malabon

But if you’re in town for a food trip, Benny’s Lounge deserves a visit for its invention of the Pizza Malabon. A handmade crust with some heft, the pizza has everything that’s on top of a typical pancit Malabon from a bright yellow aligue sauce, toppings of shrimp, squid, and a generous sprinkling of chicharon and parmesan. Tasting just as promised, the Pizza Malabon tastes of the bounty of the sea, like Malabon’s version of a Frutti di Mare.
