<div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/2020/tvpatrol/02/02/20200207-tabing-ilog.jpg"/><figcaption>The cast of ‘Tabing Ilog: The Musical’ performs snippets from the play during its media launch on Thursday. <em>Michael Bagtas, ABS-CBN News</em></figcaption></figure></div><p>MANILA — For four years until 2003, a Barbie Almalbis song would signal on Sunday afternoons the airing of a well-loved “barkada” series on ABS-CBN.</p><p>The titular theme song of “Tabing Ilog,” aside form the show itself, made such a mark on pop culture that it’s become a source of nostalgia for fans who grew up with the series.</p><p>And so when “Tabing Ilog” was finally adapted as a stage musical 17 years later, the original Almalbis tune was a certain inclusion, if not a prominent part, of the 2020 incarnation.</p><p>“I asked permission from Barbie kung puwede gamitin ‘yung music and change some words,” musical director Vincent de Jesus (“Himala: Isang Musikal,” “Changing Partners”) told ABS-CBN News on Thursday.</p><div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/2020/tvpatrol/02/02/20200207-tabing-ilog2.jpg"/><figcaption>The creative team behind ‘Tabing Ilog: The Musical’ includes (from left) Glendfford Malimban (sound design), Jade Castro (book), Vincent de Jesus (music, lyrics), and Topper Fabregas (direction). <em>Michael Bagtas, ABS-CBN News</em></figcaption></figure></div><p><br/> <br/>“Sabi ko, ‘I promise, I’ll take care and respect your work because I’m a composer, too.’ Siya ‘yung theme, e. You cannot [exclude it]. She wrote it for the series,” he said.</p><p>De Jesus did not detail how “Tabing Ilog,” the song, will figure in the play — whether it will have its own climactic spot or will be a finale number — but did confirm it will come up “here and there.”</p><p>“Interesting gamitin ‘yung theme, e. Matutuhog mo siya. It starts from the original song. And hihintayin mo ‘yun.
